About this listen

This book provides psychotherapists with a multidimensional view of childhood neglect and a practical roadmap for facilitating survivors' healing.

Working from a strong base in attachment theory, esteemed clinician Ruth Cohn explores ways therapists can recognize the signs of childhood neglect, provides recommendations for understanding lasting effects that can persist into adulthood, and lays out strategies for helping clients maximize therapeutic outcomes. Along with extensive clinical material, chapters introduce skills that therapists can develop and hone, such as the ability to recognize and discern nonverbal attempts at communication. They also provide an array of resources and evidence-based treatment modalities that therapists can use in session.

Working with the Developmental Trauma of Childhood Neglect is an essential book for any mental health professional working with survivors of childhood trauma.

There is a silent epidemic of neglected children in America. I mean a lot to me to finally understand my narrative and know that someone understands. I have understood from previous work that "it" didn't start with me. I had learned to have compassion for my teenaged parents, and I feel more compassion for myself.

As a child of neglect myself and a therapist in training I found the concepts and stories laid out in this book personally healing/affirming as well as professionally stimulating!

I thought the author said she created an outline, but chapters seem homogenous and without distinction throughout the book. I frequently referred to the chapter titles to remind myself what she was supposed to be talking about.... it all sounded the same, repeating catch phrases and even whole thoughts over and over. The editor should be fired as well. I feel cheated; I heard all I needed to hear from the sample. The narrator did a fine job though.
