About this listen

The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes - in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body.

This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering. It is a comprehensive self-help guide for working through the toxic legacy of the past and for achieving a rich and fulfilling life.

Overwhelmed by how much this helped

This book has helped more than any other book I've done on my journey to healing old wounds from my childhood. The author validates the listeners history and feelings while providing tools to help overcome these life long obstacles. I'm going to go back and re-listen to some other books that were helpful with these new tools at my disposal and then give this one another listen through.

This book saved my life, no exaggeration

I never felt more understood and comforted... I was suffering with crippling ptsd and on medication for it. Now I’ve been medication free for over 6 months and feel super stable 🙏🏽 I still get triggered once in a while but whenever things get hard I go back to this book and remember what I have to do to get myself out of that dark place!
Forever thankful beyond words for the work pete does!!

Very helpful

I was stuck in freeze mode for the longest time trying to give myself permission to rest and recuperate, but I never “got better“. This book got me unstuck and headed in the right direction. A great first step.

Must Read!

This book is relevant for most members of modern societies, where often a parent is absent or sometimes both are so busy (e.g. making money), that children grow up without the much needed love and suport. About 70% of US is overweight, this is in great part to lack of healthy food, poverty, miss information by the media, stress, toxicity and now we may add to it Complex PTSD syndrome... no doubt the obesity is also an indication of our emotional health as society. We need more awareness on how to raise children and live life...less material things and more time at home with our relatives and children.

The only self help book I’ve ever found helpful

Most self help books are scams. I’ve read some truly awful crap on here. This book doesn’t have all the answers. But at least it doesn’t try to sell us lies about having absolute control over our thoughts or how we need to adopt toxic positivity. The author understands that recovery is a lifelong process, and gives some good steps to move towards a life that is worth living.

Eye and Heart Opener

So many of my negative patterns were brought to light from this book.

I do believe that this book along with a good behavioral therapist could help a lot of people deal with trauma.

Wonderdul and on point but...

It would be helpful to have the printed version of the exercises constantly referenced. I really appreciate this book though. I feel seen.

Will have to buy actual book

This narrator’s voice was awful. I got through three chapters and had to return. I will buy the hard copy and read it myself, because I think it’s invaluable information!

The Definitive Guide For Survivor Recovery!

This is one of the most comprehensive readings on CPTSD I've ever read. The author has done an excellent job of not only outlining the structural components of trauma for victims of abuse, but has also given readers the insights into the correlations between trauma behaviors and the narcissistic patterns that invoke them, along with effective therapeutic techniques to subvert trauma responses. AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ for abuse survivors.

Great information

The narrator makes it harder to listen to, but the author's clear, candid style and explanations of how ones childhood affects a person later in life is very illuminating. He also details how to overcome trauma with concrete examples. Very important book for survivors or anyone who seeks to understand them.
