About this listen

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • An exclusive thriller writer’s retreat hosted on a private island turns lethal when one of the authors is found murdered.

“Twisty and fabulously fun . . . This debut is not to be missed!”—Amy Tintera, New York Times bestselling author of Listen for the Lie

“Deliciously twisted . . . perfect for thriller fans hungry for a fresh spin on a locked-room murder mystery.”—Erin A. Craig, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Thirteenth Child

When renowned anonymous author J. R. Alastor hires former aspiring writer Mila del Angél to host a writing retreat at his private manor off the coast of Maine, she jumps at the chance—particularly since she has an axe to grind with one of the invitees. The guest list? Six thriller authors, all masters of deceit, misdirection, and mayhem.

Confess the crimes, survive the tropes.

Alastor and Mila have masterminded a week of games, trope-fueled riddles, and maybe a jump scare or two—the perfect cover for Mila to plot a murder of her own. But when a guest turns up dead—and it’s not the murder she planned—Mila finds herself trapped in a different narrative altogether.

One by one, you’ll lose your turn.

With a storm isolating the island, and the body count rising, Mila must outwit a killer who knows literally every trick in the book.

Until only one of us remains . . .

Twisty collabs

I was hooked the whole way trying to figure it out and loved the discussion of tropes that acknowledged that basically we are all trying to that 😅. Would definitely recommend for a great traffic read!!

So twisty and fun!

For me a good Whodunnit is a comfort read. I typically spend the whole time trying to piece together the mystery. This time, though, I gave up about halfway through because it was convoluted and hard to follow. I still finished the book, because I wanted to know the answer, but as others have said I didn’t care about any of the characters. I also could. not. stand. Fletcher’s narration. I nearly wanted to skip through his chapters. I know he is written as a pretentious character but the narrator was WAY over the top and hard to listen to as a result. Not a horrible read, but wouldn’t recommend.

Convoluted but not terrible

One of the characters had the annoying cadence of Captain Kirk’s speech. Hard to follow and tough to listen to for very long.

All characters brought to an inescapable island and challenged to play a game to disclose their past crimes. A couple of plot twist convolutions provided some challenges to readers determined to solve the mystery. “There’s nothing new under the sun”.

A reinterpretation of “10 Little Indians”?

I found myself coming back to this book at the expense of my daily life. I enjoyed the characters.

Couldn’t leave book

I probably wouldn’t read again or recommend to friends but it was a fine read and definitely picked up its entertainment value near the end!

I ate this up FAST. I love a who-done-it with a twist. The tropes were slightly on the nose but that can be fun when leaning into it. It was creepy and unsettling at points which I loved and the cast of characters were great. I appreciate the big tie in as well!

Addicting and Twisty

I did really enjoy this audio book. Pros: I loved that each character had a little dark mystery and how it all intertwined. I thought the book was clever and fun. Cons: It was a little confusing in audio form with all the different characters and story lines, I will probably re-read a physical copy to try and understand it a little better. I did not like Ashton, or Fletchers voice actors... The rest were fine, but Fletcher was over the top and slowww, i had to listen at like 1.7 speed to get through his sections. Ashton, I just didn't like the sound of the voice for that character.

Overall, I did like the book though!

Great Closed Door Mystery
