About this listen
In this heart-pounding debut thriller for fans of Lisa Jewell and Celeste Ng, a first-generation Vietnamese American artist must confront nightmares past and present. . . .
Annie “Anh Le” Shaw grew up poor, but seems to have it all now: a dream career, a stunning home, and a devoted husband and daughter. When Annie’s mother, a Vietnam War refugee, dies suddenly one night, Annie’s carefully curated life begins to unravel. Her obsessive-compulsive disorder, which she thought she’d vanquished years ago, comes roaring back—but this time, the disturbing fixations swirling around in Annie’s brain might actually be coming true.
A prominent art patron disappears, and the investigation zeroes in on Annie. Spiraling with self-doubt, she distances herself from her family and friends, only to wake up in a hotel room—naked, next to a lifeless body. The police have more questions, but with her mind increasingly fractured, Annie doesn’t have answers. All she knows is this: She will do anything to protect her daughter—even if it means losing herself.
With dizzying twists, You Know What You Did is both a harrowing thriller and a heartfelt exploration of the refugee experience, the legacies we leave for our children, and the unbreakable bonds between mothers and daughters.

Story
The last thing Nick Morrow expected to receive was an invitation from his father to return home. When he left rural Nebraska behind, he believed he was leaving everything there, including his abusive father, Carlyle, and the farm that loomed so large in memory, forever. But neither Nick nor his brother Joshua, disowned for marrying Emilia, a woman of Asian descent, can ignore such summons from their father, who hopes for a deathbed reconciliation. Predictably, Joshua and Carlyle quickly warm to each other while Nick and Emilia are left to their own devices.

Eve doesn’t have any living relatives, she’s lost touch with her friends, and her partner is out of the picture. Best of all, she’s expecting a baby. Eve thinks she’s landed the greatest gig—previously penniless, now she’ll live like a queen and have a promising future for her daughter. But the job seems too good to be true.

Great storyline, great narrator!
The protagonist, a compelling artist suffering from severe OCD, is forced to go over and over the events in her life. Always questioning herself…did I say that, think that, do that? And we question with her. The title is rife with irony. A really good first novel with a 5-star narrator. Kim Mai Guest is in perfect harmony with the beautifully written words of Nguyen. I look forward to more from these two artists!

Wheres the story?
25 chapters in and nothing has happend. I find the main character Annie is whiney and annoying. I would love to quite listening now, it's not like I will miss anything but I will keep going. Maybe it will pick up?

My first unfinished book in a long time
I made it through 18 chapters and absolutely nothing has happened. It’s been nothing but describing the insufferable and unsympathetic main character. I have zero desire to find out what happens.
