About this listen

A suspenseful, cutting-edge novel about two parents who finally get the daughter they’ve always wanted—it’s too bad she isn’t real. From the author of We Hear Voices.

For Tamsyn and Ed, life is tough. They both work long hours for very little money and come home to their moody, rebellious daughter, Scarlett.

After a tragic accident leaves Scarlett comatose and with little chance of recovery, Tamsyn and Ed are out of options until a lifeline emerges in the form of an unusual medical trial. In exchange for the very best treatment for Scarlett, a fully furnished apartment, and a limitless spending account, the family must agree to move to Switzerland and welcome an artificial copy of their daughter into their home.

Suddenly their life is transformed. Tamsyn and Ed want for nothing, and the AI replacement, Sophie, makes it feel just like having their daughter back—except without all the bad parts. Sophie is engaged, happy, and actually wants to spend time with her parents.

But things take a turn for the worse when Scarlett makes a very real recovery and the family discovers that the forces behind their new life are darker than they ever could have imagined.

Got me hooked very fast. Ending felt rushed but was still a fun read for someone who doesn't like sci-fi.

New and fun

Really enjoyed this thriller - excellent twist and left a bit open ended - would love to see this turn into a series. Loved the narration!

excellent sci-fi psychological thriller

I loved this one. It was very unique and I listened to it in a day and a half. I normally do not like any type of sci-fi anything, but this hooked me from the start! A refreshing change from usual domestic thrillers that I normally read. I could see this turned into a series.

Kept me listening!

While I'm writing this there are not many reviews. Don't let this scare you into not reading this book, it is a wonderful psychological thriller. The plot is great. The story is wonderful with great twists and turns. I loved it all. I wish the ending was a little more detailed but thats because I wanted the story to go on forever. I hope this book turns into a series.

NEW RELEASE! Great thriller book!

This was a thought provoking exposition of the triumphs and pitfalls of the mine field of unfettered technology and the slippery slope of its capacity and inevitable unforeseen consequences.
This technology is here and firm limitations must be established before it evolves beyond this fledging stage.
The narrators did a great job keeping the listener engaged and anticipating the next developments of this cautionary tale.
There were a couple of elements that had somewhat hollow resolutions but did not negatively impact the story.
I appreciate the supplemental questions at the end of the book to foster further introspective musings or to foster lively conversation among a group

Rationalization is a powerful thing…

Excellent overall plot but a bit slow and redundant at times. Human-cyborg interaction we’ll done.

Good read

The story moved forward very slowly. Writing focusing on the characters thoughts and feelings was repetitive. The narration was very well done though. I enjoyed the difference between the two narrators.

Repetative

I thought England had universal healthcare so why would a family living in poverty have health insurance that would only last for eight weeks? This was the entire basis for the Dad’s decision to accept the crazy offer as the only option to save his daughter’s life.

I couldn’t get past…
