Publisher's summary
Are you stuck? Struggle. That's the word that comes to mind when I think about the transition from blue belt to purple belt. For reasons that I can't quite work out, when I came to the later stages of being a blue belt I felt confused and lost in my game. Trying to put all the pieces together seemed like a task too far and quitting looked like an option, after all, most guys my age are hitting the golf course or surfing not rolling on the floor with sweat soaked people. This quitting idea seemed an option at least. In an effort to review what I was doing and pushing through this plateau I developed a few habits that not only brought about a huge change in my game but by applying them on a consistent basis turned me into a respected player in my academy. From obscurity to recognition, even from Black belts, and it only took me one month! This is a great manual for anyone interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Traditional Jiu Jitsu, MMA and Grappling.

For both competition Jiu Jitsu and self-defense Jiu Jitsu, most white belts need to fully understand the concepts, but they can be VERY confusing!

What are the origins of Brazilian jiujitsu? Is it merely a by-product—a rebel offspring—of judo? What was the nature and content of the art that Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. “Count Koma”, and other Japanese were teaching in the Amazon? Was it judo? Jiujitsu? His own personal fight-tested style, built on a foundation of judo and informed by his dozens and dozens of matches around the world? What was the bridge between the art he learned at the Kodokan and the Brazilian style--a style now practiced by millions worldwide and growing bigger every day--that claims him as its godfather?

This book is about a journey. A journey of perspective. We all go through life with our own perceptions and expectations based on our pasts, experiences, and beliefs. Beliefs of how things are or how they should be. We interpret experiences and assign meanings to them. Many times, the meanings we assign, and the perceptions we have based on them, are very limited. We project our preconceived notions into situations which oftentimes keeps us from fully understanding or appreciating the opportunities we have at our fingertips.

What’s the number one thing stopping you from playing your best tennis? Ian Westermann, founder of the world’s #1 online tennis instruction portal, Essentialtennis.com, will confidently say it’s an obstacle you probably never thought of: The ball. The whole point of tennis is to hit the ball over the net and in, so how can the ball be the thing that’s standing in the way? In fact, this is why the ball is such an impediment: your desire to hit a good shot, with the right mix of power and spin, to a specific spot on the court, prevents you from striking the ball the way you should.

Story
CrossFit trainer Ben Bergeron has helped build the world's fittest athletes, but he's not like other coaches. He believes that greatness is not for the elite few; that winning is a result, not a goal; and that character, not talent, is what makes a true champion. His powerful philosophy can help anyone excel at all aspects of life. Using the dramatic competition between the top contenders at the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games® as a background, Ben explores the step-by-step process of achieving excellence and the unique set of positive character traits necessary for leveling up to world-class. The mindset and methodology that have produced some of the greatest athletes in the world's most grueling sport can work equally well for golfers, lawyers, artists, entrepreneurs - anyone who's willing to commit totally to becoming better than the best.

Story
He's been called the best in the world at the mental game of tennis. Brad Gilbert's strokes may not be pretty, but looks aren't everything. He has beaten the tour's biggest names - all by playing his "ugly" game. Now, in Winning Ugly, Gilbert teaches recreational players how to win more often without necessarily even changing their strokes. The key to success, he says, is to become a better thinking player - to recognize, analyze, and capitalize. That means out-thinking opponents before, during, and after a match - forcing him or her to play your game.

As coaches to some of golf's top players, Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott have designed and refined a revolutionary way of teaching the game, with great results. They don't believe in prescribing the same stance, grip, and swing to everyone, followed by hours of purposeless drilling. They don't even believe in beginning with physical technique. Their success has proven to them that a great game begins with a great vision. Every Shot Must Have a Purpose offers cutting-edge techniques for integrating the physical, technical, mental, emotional, and social parts of a player's game.

Story
Golf is a beloved yet technical game, so a sound swing and precise technique are essential. Most golfers who want to improve their skills go to the range and work painstakingly on their swings, not realizing it's often their performance state on the course that needs work, not their technique. Simple things such as awareness of your balance, tension, and tempo, as well as the ability to control mental, emotional, and social variables you encounter while playing, can quickly take your game to a new performance level.

Story
Famous three-time Grand Slam winner Arthur Ashe pointed out that many in sports fall victim to “paralysis by analysis”. Athletes on any level can experience the pain of overthinking and sabotaging their performance. Blame many traditional methods of teaching and training. How can we train smarter, not harder? If only our body and mind could perform in a way that’s more natural and instinctive. The best athletes have this quality, but many feel it is simply unattainable for them. I assure you it is not.

Story
It is no secret that more than two-thirds of the shots a golfer makes are shorts ones: putts, chips, and pitches. Long drives may garner applause, but whether a golfer wants to win the Masters or just five bucks from a friend on Saturday morning, it’s the little shots that make the difference. In The Unstoppable Golfer, Dr. Bob Rotella takes the same wisdom and experience that have worked for clients like Davis Love III and David Toms to help you master this special art of short shots and avoid all the frustration out of this increasingly challenging element of the game.

Beginner minus 1000
I opened this chapter in my life recently and so far I am amazed with the culture, environment, sport and of course the people. Mr. Oliver Staark thank you for the perspective and the may angles you chose to write from. Your interlocking fields of thought are helping me calm and open my mind and think about "my game", whatever that will be, as I do not know yet. Whatever my map evolves to, I'll have a bit of thanks to your thought provoking words as well, to my trying to be the water. Thank you.

Shallow and empty
What would have made Zen Jiu Jitsu better?
Some suggestions regarding techniques -- this is really the most obvious strategy I've ever seen.
Practice consistently, take notes, and review. Don't let other things get in the way of your practice.
There - i just saved you the effort of reading the book - that's what it all boils down to - no good suggestions on drills, or even a plan for that matter. I unfortunately picked up three of his books and they all were similar - the titles sound great, but the content is entirely lacking of anything helpful.
Would you ever listen to anything by Mr. Oliver Staark again?
No.
Would you be willing to try another one of Kirk Hanley’s performances?
No
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No - if I could have returned it I would have - I read a lot of jiu jitsu books and these are the most worthless I've ever encountered. Again - the titles sound as if these would be a valuable addition, but the content is absolutely devoid of any value There is nothing that i gained from any of the titles i purchased -- it's really like he didn't even try. Everything in there is basic common sense - and a lot of talk about himself and his journey - which can be reallly interesting, but in this case it's not - no lesson-learned type stories, nothing exciting -- I hate to be so harsh, but having spend the money for three of the books I just have to ensure folks know what they're getting - which is really zilch.
