Publisher's summary

An absorbing, entertaining diet memoir with humor, empathy, and yoga.Meet your new best yoga-and-healthy-eating friend in this smart, accessible, and funny memoir of dieting and discovery.

For years, Jessica struggled with fluctuating weight and bouts of unhappiness. Like many of us, she found comfort in food and craved cigarettes and self-confidence. Then one day Jessica took her first yoga class in Katmandu. She lost 40 pounds and changed her life forever.

In enLIGHTened, Jessica shares the core principles of yoga philosophy—not the poses and postures, but the ancient system of ideas that lies behind them, drawn from a 2000-year-old text called the Yoga Sutras. The inspiration for this memoir-driven diet and health book is studied by devout yoga students and teachers, and offers answers to eating smartly, living right, and losing weight.Jessica goes beyond yoga's merge into mainstream—beyond trendy diets, unsustainable exercise routines, and the quest for the perfect figure. Using spiritual philosophy, and personal stories everyone can relate to, she sets the reader on a journey to self-acceptance, personal peace, and long-term health.

Editorial reviews

Jessica Berger Gross is a yoga writer whose articles have appeared in Yoga Journal, Lilith, Salon, and many other publications, and enLIGHTened is her memoir of using yoga to lose weight. Having suffered bouts of unhappiness, Gross re-discovered yoga in the mountains of Tibet, and her life changed. Self-described as "enlightened", Gross introduces the listener to the philosophical and spiritual bases for yoga as revealed in the 2000-year old Yoga Sutras. Cheerfully performed by Bernadette Dunne, enLIGHTened intends to move the listener toward self-acceptance, health, and peace.

Thought provoking

I don’t know as much about yoga as some who have read this book, but this book made me think about yoga, vegetarianism, getting healthy, and many other things. I took a lot away from it. I think I feel like I can try some of the things mentioned in this book.

Inspirational

I will listen to this again so that I can focus only emotional eating. I will need to hear this author's story so that I put an end to my destructive relationship with food.

Good story, narrator takes getting used to

Great story and effective advice. The narrator has a voice too mature for this story which is largely from the woman's younger life. fhe delivery is also stiff and she seemed to be pronouncing things with more of a Japanese flare when reading sanskrit. still I really like this book and all it contains s
