About this listen

From the beginning of time, there have been many monumental questions that have perplexed the human race such as: Why are we here? What is the meaning of life? And... Who’s on first?

In The History of Sketch Comedy, Emmy and Peabody-winning actor, writer and producer Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele, The Prom, Jingle Jangle) embarks listeners on an epic, insightful and utterly entertaining voyage through the annals of sketch comedy. Key takes us from the early flatulence jokes of Ancient Greece and the acting troupes of Europe in the 1500s, to the rise of The Second City in Chicago and his own comedy origins on the ball fields near Detroit’s 8 Mile. Equal parts masterclass, personal odyssey and virtuoso performance; Key dissects the landmark characters, concepts and performers that pushed the boundaries and forged new ground in the comedy pantheon, and along the way reveals his own experiences of discovering and being influenced by them.

Over the course of ten half-hour chapters, one of the most beloved voices of our time treats listeners to a private, millennia-spanning interpretation of sketch comedy history, from its humble past to its immodest present.

1st of all KMK is hilarious, one of the best physical comedians of our day, when your audience not only understands what is being communicated by simply A LOOK, but its completely hilarious at that?!- That's gold! Now that might not exactly relay over an audiobook where you can't see him, but at least its entertaining regardless and so far it's easy enough for young people to enjoy as well! Which by the way is perfect for the future generations of comedians to come, looking up to their predecessors and learning about the comedy that came before them just as young Keegan probably did himself. In fact besides a rare curse word and a section about sex, its almost great for kids!

Now I get not everyone enjoys everything but I don't get being hateful, its possible to say you don't like it and why without being hateful and commenting on mental illness! I of course wanted to wait until I had a listen to actually write an opposing review but I'm sure I spent much more time considering my review than the "negative reviewer" since theirs was written poorly, hard to follow in one part, and full of misspellings so maybe they just didn't have the intelligence to enjoy history or something, I'm not sure, but I think it's just fine and educational while being entertaining!

Regardless of the scathing review, or my more favorable one, please listen to it yourself and have your own opinion before judging and if for some reason you don't enjoy it that's ok, just please have a reason to back it up instead of being hateful, thanks!

I saw a scathing review and was confused!

As a long time sketch comedy fan, this podcast did not disappoint. Incredible production and journalism. The vocal performance is top tier! Very entertaining with sprinkles of gems throughout. Hope there is more coming!

Keegan-Michael Key is in full shecky -mode, literally screaming every line. He begs so hard to be liked that it’s annoying and a complete turn off.

Stop Trying So Hard!

I have a bachelors in theatre so I started with a base understanding of the concepts discussed. I found the story telling enjoyable and I have a greater appreciation for sketch now. The games, the insights, and the way comedians use the history in the sketches was so interesting! Thank you for this series.

Fun and informative

Dude is not funny. I’m sure he’s a hard worker and may possibly be respected amongst his peers, but none of his sketches or podcast are remotely funny. I lie, maybe he has 1 or two decent sketches on his Comedy Central tv show key and pelle, but god his a great majority of his sketches is like a kid that needs adhd pills. Why we have these fools running comedy is way above my pay grade. But I just want to to out there, I loath his voice, personality, and a great majority of his roles and sketches he’s done.

Dude need to mellow out.

I made it through five episodes, only because I kept waiting for something to be funny. It was certainly funny to the author, hilarious at times, but I just didn't share his enjoyment. Or maybe you just had to be there. Sigh.

Badly written, badly produced and directed. I am stunned Michael-Keegan Key thought this was a good idea and allowed even the first episode to be released. Key seems to be directing himself to an audience that's recenly woken from a 20-year coma or 12-year-olds. If you want to listen to people talk about the craft of comedy, listen to the Rule of Three podcast where there are adults having an intelligent and interesting conversation.

Shockingly Bad
