Sicily, April 16, 1677. From his deathbed, Charles III's viceroy, don Angel de Guzmàn, marquis of Castel de Roderigo, names his wife, donna Eleonora, as his successor. Eleonora di Mora is a highly intelligent and capable woman who immediately applies her political acumen to heal the scarred soul of Palermo, a city afflicted by poverty, misery, and the frequent uprisings they entail. When Inspector Montalbano receives an early-morning phone call it proves to be the start of a very trying day. For the caller expects Montalbano to arrive imminently at a rendezvous with some friends. But before he can reply, the caller announces himself as someone called Riccardino and hangs up. Later that day, news comes in of a brutal slaying in broad daylight by an unknown assassin who makes his getaway on a motorbike. The day gets off to a bad start for Montalbano: while trying to break up a fight on Marinella beach, he hits the wrong man and is stopped by the Carabinieri. A few days later, the same thing happens again, but this time the woman abducted is the niece of Enzo, the owner of Montalbano's favorite trattoria. The only link between the two events is that both women are 30 years old and work in a bank.

Tutto inizia con un cellulare spento. A telefonare è Ester, a non rispondere è Giulio, finito in ospedale a causa di un brutto tamponamento sulla via Aurelia. A riaccendere il telefonino, invece, è Giuditta, la moglie di Giulio, che ovviamente di Ester non sa nulla. Potrebbe essere l'inizio di una commedia rosa, ma il colore di questa storia è decisamente un altro: un testimone, infatti, sostiene che quello di Giulio non sia stato un incidente, ma un tentato omicidio, e la pratica passa dagli uffici dell'assicurazione a quelli del commissariato.
