This story is a masterful tale of horror that was first published in Weird Tales magazine in 1941. It is the story of young Charles Dexter Ward, who in 1918 becomes embroiled in the past, due to his fascination with the history of his wizard ancestor - who was known for his haunting of graveyards, as well as his apparent lack of aging, and his chemical experiments. Ward physically resembles this ancestor, Joseph Curwen, and he attempts to duplicate Curwen's magic and alchemical feats.

Time Pawn first appeared in Thrilling Wonder Stories in June ,1954. Under pressure from his publishers, Dick expanded the story into a full length novel - Doctor Futurity. The original is an excellent story but most critics agree that the expanded version was not a success.

Jack is taken to Nabb's ranch and learns that it can be a dangerous place, since it is challenged by cattle thieves and a corrupt rancher who is after Naab's water rights. The greatest danger Hare faces, though, is over Mescal, a half-Navajo shepherdess with whom he falls in love.
