The Metamorphoses by Publius Ovidius Naso (43 B.C. - A.D. 17) has, over the centuries, been the most popular and influential work from our classical tradition. This extraordinary collection of some 250 Greek and Roman myths and folk tales has always been a popular favorite, and has decisively shaped western art and literature from the moment it was completed in A.D. 8. The stories are particularly vivid when read by David Horovitch, in this new lively verse translation by Ian Johnston.

In February 1864, 500 Union prisoners of war arrived at the Confederate stockade at Anderson Station, Georgia. In this series we listen to short stories that are NOT by perhaps the most well-known author of this type. But the many other rich talents in the volume may have treated the subject matter a little differently, or were perhaps just overlooked in the stampede to applaud the winner, but these authors are of equal merit.

OVIDS METAMORFOSER hører hjemme blandt eventyrenes skatte sammen med 1001 Nat, Grimm og H.C. Andersen. Beretningen strækker sig fra verdens skabelse til kejser Augustus' tid, og i den ramme får Ovid fortalt de fleste af den græsk-romerske verdens sagn om guder og helte. Han gør det mesterligt, således at digtet i sin helhed er en beskrivelse af menneskelivet og dets vidunderlighed.

Der Dichter selbst verspricht: "Wir werden sicheren Liebesgenuss und erlaubte Heimlichkeiten besingen, und in meinem Gedicht wird kein Verbrechen gelehrt." Ob das 2000 Jahre alte Lehrgedicht über die Liebe heutzutage noch praktisch hilfreich ist, müssen Jüngere beurteilen. Die ältere Generation mag jedenfalls ihr ästhetisches Vergnügen daran haben. Oder wird man mich schelten, weil ich ein Frauenbild verbreiten helfe, das so gar nicht in unsere Zeit passt (und das ja auch gar nicht meines ist)?

Ovids Liebeskunst ist der Klassiker der Liebeslehre. Als erste europäische Liebeslehre unterscheidet sie sich grundsätzlich von orientalischen Handbüchern der Liebeskunst wie etwa dem Kamasutra. Ovid geht es um die Erotik, um das gesellschaftliche Phänomen der Liebe, weniger um den Aspekt der sexuellen Perfektion - ohne diesen Bereich allerdings völlig auszusparen.
