It is the 27th century, and humanity has rallied under the flag of the United Nations in order to join the Coalition, a multi-species alliance working together to defend their borders from hostile alien races. The Pinwheel is the largest and most strategically important military space station in human territory, a place where humans and their allies rub shoulders, living and working in close proximity. Tempers fly and passions inflame as disparate cultures are forced together, all while an interstellar conflict rages around them.
When Stanley drops out of agricultural college to join the Navy, he's shipped off to the Pinwheel to complete his training as a UNN Marine. There, he meets Raz, an unruly alien who seems more concerned with her own status than making friends with the other recruits. She's big, tough, and more than a little scary, but he'll have to find a way to befriend her if he wants to complete the program.
A science fiction action romance, with narration by Bordeaux Black.

Fast forwarding solves that problem.
That being said the story line is good, the narration pretty good. Ms. Black skillfully uses dialect and tonal inflection to successfully differentiate the characters in the story.
Sentient space people learn to get along.

the MC at a point makes a true remark about the people of Razs plant being technologically inferior to earth's.
I'd also would have liked the MC to as a little lesson on our history. we weren't tree apes we walked the planes with the lions and the predators coming out on top. with superior technology. the technology is our claws.
also I kinda wish the MC didn't hold a bad attitude.
like when she remarked that he was dead... say "haha. yup you got me." then follow up with a light hearted attitude rather then that of a whiner.
It is annoying at times

The story is enjoyable, and the characters were good. Stanly is a little bit of a whiney manlet, though, but I'm probably projecting how I would have handled the situation onto his character. Raz was rather sexy to me, to be honest. I loved her personality, as rough around the edges as it was, she could choke me anytime. The world building was also surprising given how short the book is, and I would encourage the author to return to the setting in the future with different characters. Perhaps something more harem themed with how the Borealis are normally more pack focused.
Aside from how childish the MC could be on occasion, the only other criticism I can really lob is that the narration quality was hit or miss. There are several spots where you can tell that Miss Black had cut and resumed recording in mid-chapter without reviewing the previous audio and warming up to match the tone and cadence of what she previously recorded. She also entirely forgot or confused the accents she used for a few of the characters. I also personally think she puts too much husk in her voice when it isn't necessary, which can't be good for her vocal stamina, and probably helps contribute to the fluctuations in the vocal quality. There are points where you can hear her natural tone of speech, which I honestly find more intoxicating then when she tries to lay the "sexy" husk on too thick. Regardless, she's clearly talented in her craft, I just worry she might be burning the candle at both ends when she records.
All in all, the story was fun and sexy. Give it a listen.
Pretty darn good. Wouldn't mind a series.

great book

There are feelings between Stanley and Raz, which build and change over the course of the entire book. Culture clash, blood is spilled, and aliens learn to integrate and work together.
It’s a hard science fiction universe and sticks to its guns where aliens aren’t just humans with a coat of paint splashed on them. The Krell and Borealans are aliens, and feel alien, with their own social systems and biology-influenced cultures.
An excellent start to a science fiction series
