Publisher's summary

Hunter has spent the last two years running in place. Trying to get ahead of the bills. Trying to provide for her sister, Piper, and her nephews. Trying to finish her nursing education. Trying to keep Piper out of her criminal husband's claws.

Big, bad Jed Wolfe is a con artist, a manipulator, and he's currently doing 10 years for counterfeiting. Now is Hunter's best chance to convince Piper that he's bad news and that they can survive without him.

Except the mortgage is overdue again, there's an eviction notice stapled to the front door, and Hunter can see it in Piper's eyes. She wants to crawl back to Jed and ask him how to dig out of this mess.

They're getting desperate, and Hunter begs Piper not to be like him.

Then along comes a beautiful girl in a red cap. Her grandmother is sick, she needs Hunter's nursing help, and the pay is great. It's just what they need, and soon Hunter is able to catch her breath. Stop running in place. Start to feel something that she hasn't had time for in years.

Contains mature themes.

It was alright..

But it kinda lacked substance. Like a rock without pebbles. It had a plot and wasn't boring, but there was no feeling of dread or worry at all. It was just too clean cut. Like a check list.

I personally am not a fan of the narrator, but that's because of other books. So it took away from the enjoyment a bit.

I couldn't handle how much Piper uses Hunter

Honestly had high hopes for this book and was super excited! But I had to stop at the end of chapter 8 bc I couldn't stand how much Piper would just use and expect Hunter to do all the heavy work.
This next part is a bit of a spoiler... As the description of the book says Hunter starts a new job and on the second day the sister call saying how youngest child had fever and had to come home from school and she can't miss work so she wants to drop him off at her work place... Which alone is redioules for a new job but I understand the kids sick and the client is alright with it... but the INSTEAD of going to work like she said she would and why she jeopardized her sisters job for, she instead CALLS OFF and goes visits her horrible husband in jail!! WTF! Why did you even have your sister watch the child for!! I was so pissed, then on top of it she told the scheming husband how Hunter works for a rich family now, which obviously interests him much... yep at that point I dropped it🤦‍♀️ had so much anger it wasn't worth it. I wanted a enjoyable read not one I want to off characters in the first 8 chapters.

Narrator was pretty good, I liked how she did different voices for changes and when with the flow of story, like whispering when needed.
