About this listen

Charlotte Davenport is a woman on a singular mission: get onto a ship bound for Atlantis by any means necessary, and get home to her sister. When she joins the crew of the Malediction, she has no idea she's made herself an unwitting captive of its pirate captain. Captain Lirian Jurel is cocky and secretive and infuriatingly handsome, and she can't shake the feeling that he's laughing at her . . . but Charlotte has a secret of her own, and she'll do anything to keep it.

Captain Lirian Jurel has only one thing on his mind—the next adventure. F--king, feasting, and fighting—it's a pirate's life for him. He's never been able to stay away from danger, and Charlotte Davenport—the impudent little witch disguising herself as a member of his crew—seems like the most dangerous creature he's ever encountered.

Striking a bargain to bring her home is an easy trade for having her warm in his bed . . . But bringing her home means saying goodbye, which is harder than he anticipated.

When you're a vicious sea monster like him, being alone is the wisest course of action, but once they reach Atlantis, Lirian vows to help Charlotte see her journey through—wherever it leads.

Contains mature themes.

Well, that was interesting

This is the first book by this author for me. I kept hearing good things about this one and decided I'd give the audiobook a listen. The story is very much a monster romance with pirates and all sorts of strange worlds mingling together. It was fun.

I enjoy listening to Justine Eyre in anything she does, so the narration was mostly good. The male narrator was good for male voices, but his attempt at a female voice was less so - not terrible, but not good either.

Loved this book!!

I have always been a huge fan of C.M. Nascosta, so when I found out they were writing a pirate/monster romance novel I couldn’t wait to read it!! And I wasn’t disappointed at all! I loved the story and both narrators did a fantastic job!

So many teeth!

This is the perfect femme fatale fable for all of those bored with tired tales of virgin princesses, maiden women saved by brave princes and young daughters married off to rich barons. This book is like an endless gift basket, so many little unexpected treats in here!

Hated the narrators, loved the story

I love most C.M. Nascosta books and this is just another great story in an entirely different fantasy world. I love the navigation between planes and pirates. I loved how they were both shape changing monsters of the sea, tho she was much more on the Greek mythology horror side for sure. All of that was great and I'm all for more!

However, I absolutely hated the narrators. The woman sounds like she was 90 years old and the man's narration was just boring and too American for the dialogue. I preferred his voice though because her voice was just so annoying and scratchy. It was just jarring going back and forth between these two accents in dual narration instead of duet. Honestly, it would've been fine if he just narrated the entire book because nothing could've fixed that woman's voice and I'm going to avoid books she has narrated.

I’m sad about this book

I have read/listened to every book I could find by CM Nascosta & have loved them all until this story. It seemed like it was written by a different person. The character building was vague which may have been intentional but made the story hard for me to follow. World building was also lacking. I kept waiting for a reveal. I almost stopped listening at several points because the FMC narrator was so hard to listen to. I looked her up & she has received many accolades, her style just seemed not to match with the FMC. The voice she used would’ve been appropriate for an old woman in my opinion, her narration was almost choked sounding. The MMC narrator was great until he had to voice female characters, his rendition of the female voices was painful, sounding to me like an ultra lispy rendition of a “gay man” voice. So bad. Unfortunate.

Love that it joins 2 of my fave genres

Very enjoyable story. I love how they didn't go the easy sea creature route with mermaids (and that's saying a lot since I love them so much they're most of the decor in my house lol)
Only downer for me was I usually enjoy the female narrator more but this wasn't her best. She's not horrible- she's just had better.

It’s giving Pirates of the Caribbean but monsters

That was a TRIP. Hi, my name is Cheyenne and I’m addicted to anything CM Nascosta writes. Holy crud. No lie, when she did the thing to his second thing I HOLLERED. it was 3AM and my husband thought something had happened. Ugh so damn good. These narrators were phenomenal! Great accents!

That rogue is ravished

Consider that rogue ravished!

Lady Charlotte Davenport has to get home. Captain Lirian Jurel is headed in the right direction on his ship, the Malediction. It's bad luck for women to be on ships, everyone knows that. And Charlotte isn't sure when her next chance will be. Clearly her only choice is to cosplay a cabin boy and make herself as useful as possible during the voyage.

Lirian knew from the start that Charlie wasn't your average cabin boy. That didn't stop him from playing along with Charlotte's little ruse for a time. Eventually, as all good ruses go, the jig is up. After that: hilarity, swashbuckling, and ravishing ensue.

In this book there are portals and petticoats. There are pleasure auctions and poetic declarations of love. There are downstairs teeth and vore. This. Book. Has. It. All!!! When they said Bonkers, they meant it!! And we love it!

ETA: I am so in love with experiencing a book that I love in a new way. For this one, I'm glad I had already read and enjoyed the book without the audio experience. I didn't love the Charlotte POV narrator's accent, and the Lirian POV narrator's lady voice was not good. HOWEVER. Because I was already invested in the story, it didn't detract much from my enjoyment of Lirian and Charlotte sniping at one another!

And snipe they did. These two are hilarious. Lirian is just enjoying playing with her, and Charlotte really believes that she's playing at a convincing cabin boy. Even though every other word out of her mouth is something imperious or bratty. It's perfection.

That doesn't even cover their monstrous natures. Everyone knows that Lirian is a sea monster. But then you find out what Charlotte is and even knowing it was coming, my jaw was on the floor. The reveal is so good.

Great story, Meh narration

As others have said, the male narrator could use some work on his female voices. Sounded more like a drag queen than a woman. And I noticed the character accents didn't stay consistent. His accent for the MMC changed quite a bit. The female narrator had a very weird voice for the MFC - oddly scratchy that didn't really fit the character. The two narrators had such different voices for each character it sort of took you out of the story at many points. If that will bother you, take it into consideration. But I loved the story enough to overlook it.

The story was great. I loved the interactions between the two. Occasionally wondered how the MFC could be quite so obtuse, but again, I loved the story and a lot of romances make one or more of the characters a bit daft to what the other person is thinking. I liked the "monster" element. Absolutely loved the MFC's monster-side. Good steamy scenes and the MFC's confidence was a nice change. You get tired of the MMC always "teaching" a woman what she should like.
