About this listen

To what extent would you go to avenge your husband's infidelity?

Stay-at-home mom Sarah Johnson has the perfect family - a handsome, hardworking husband and two healthy and beautiful children. At least, that's what she's been telling herself for years. After the tragedies in her youth, Sarah deemed living a lie easier than dwelling on the past and facing her everyday failures. To avoid any kind of confrontation at home, she doesn't read her husband's emails or spy on him like most jealous wives do. She wouldn't jeopardize her comfortable but dull life for anything.

But Sarah's world is about to crumble around her when she receives a phone call from a man with a heavy foreign accent telling her that her perfect husband has put a price on her head. She is offered two weeks to come up with a counteroffer or die.

Why would her model husband, Mike, want her dead? Hasn't she been the perfect wife? Or has her karma finally caught up with her - making her pay for her former transgressions?

The final countdown begins, and now, Sarah has to race against time to find out what went wrong in her marriage and find a way out of this nightmare.

So the game of life or death begins. Secrets are unveiled. Emotions are unleashed. Actions are taken.

Will there be a winner in this dangerous game when no one can escape the twist of fate?

Disappointed

The book, overall, was well-written, but the ending lacked depth and coherence. However, Lisa Flanagan's exceptional narration brought the characters to life, elevating my rating from a 2 to a 3.

The Twist

I loved the story. The plot, the full circle and the twists in the story .

I finished it

Wow. Where do I start? This book is so unbelievable and faulty that it's almost laughable. I stuck with it because I wanted to see how it could possibly end. If you read it, you'll understand what I mean. In the end, the ending (pun intended) left me hanging, unbelievable and laughable to the end.

Sarah is a wife who loves her husband for some reason. I never figured out why. He demeans her, screams that she's useless, that he earns all the money while she sits around doing nothing, has a serious affair with an Italian bimbo. Never mind they have 2 kids and he never wanted her to work, but to stay home and raise their kids right. Then she gets a phone call from a man with a heavy accent telling her that he's going to kill her if she doesn't give him double the amount her husband has given him to kill her. Her husband has hired an assassin??? Rather than going to the police or challenging her husband (how about with a wire for the police?), she negotiates with the assassin to give her 14 days to raise the money. Raise $200,000 when her husband is an airman fireman with the Air Force? I know how little they make! That's when, in order to finish the book, you have to totally suspend belief.

The story goes on with her not confronting her husband. She doesn't notice that their rental house has no income, but is instead housing her husband's young, pregnant, beautiful Italian mistress. She has to check to see how much money they have in their joint bank account. She has a wild monkey-sex affair with a neighbor, including sex in the kitchen while their neighbors and her husband are in their yard having a block party. She goes on a race car ride with this neighbor, and they pull over during the race to have wild sex in the car. Her husband accuses her of having an affair and actually is outraged when he's doing what he's doing, including hiring an assassin.

She says unbelievable things like “My throat is aching for a mojito.” Really? “I don’t know to whom you’ve been talking…” when her husband accuses her of having an affair. Takes her kids to stay with her's husband's unwilling weird mother, who dresses like a teenager and makes them sit on the couch and watch her "shows", not letting them do anything else. And Sarah knows this, but takes them there anyway because she wants them to be safe.

So much could've been done with this book. But it wasn't. If this was billed as a farce, and made more interesting, I'd be writing a good review. Instead, I'm pretty sure I wasted my time on this read.

Terrible ending

The book was pretty good and kept me interested until the end. I hate when books leave me hanging and this one was one of the worst.

Not great writing, some silly parts.

Enjoyed the story even though it was rather poorly written, until our protagonist mentioned she was out of shape at a size 10. really? In what universe?
I guess that's why hubby wanted her dead too. Sigh.... Too shallow, too juvenile in parts.

Intriging

The ending was terrible. It was an expected end but should have been a twist.

Entertaining but not great

This storyline was somewhat entertaining at times –– but it was just barely that because overall it was extremely implausible and unbelievable (more so than the usual mystery/suspense/thriller) and disconnected. I agree with other reviews that it was quite silly at times. The mother had little "motherly" instinct or drive, she always mentions her kids and her love for them but she isn't really driven or motivated enough by them. This is only compared to how almost all mothers in other stories become so determined when their children are involved. The format of the story telling was interesting with the police interviews in-between chapters, but the narrator did not pause enough between so I often got mixed up when the chapters ended and the police interviews blended right in, I even listened on a slower speed and it was still quite fast. I would not recommend the book but even though I was not bored by it, I also wasn't at all impressed. The story had all the right elements for a really great and solid mystery/thriller/suspense: infidelity/untrustworthy spouse, deceptively happy family life, murder, mysterious third-party threats, dark/disturbing past –– but the development and details were a disjointedly executed and the ending got very convoluted and far-fetched and very disconnected to the overall storyline.
