About this listen

Set in 1893 and seasoned with wholesome humor, A Proper Pursuit tells the uplifting story of 20-year old Violet Hayes and her search for her elusive mother and for true love.

Fresh from finishing school, Violet receives a double shock. Her dad announces his upcoming wedding and then confesses an old lie - her mom didn't really leave for a sanitarium 11 years ago. But why then did she leave?

Under cover of visiting the World's Fair, Violet travels to the stately Chicago home of her saintly grandmother and three eccentric great aunts. In her quest for her mother, Violet soon discovers much about faith, life, and love as she marches for women's rights, feeds slum dwellers, hob-knobs with the highfalutin, plays piano for evangelistic meetings, and ponders various marriage proposals.

Lynn Austin, multiple Christy Award-winning author of A Woman's Place, creates vivid historical settings with vibrant characters.

Deep and funny

I LOVED this book! I loved that through Violet's grandmother and three aunts, we saw very different aspects of Chicago, the Word's Fair, and women's roles in 1893. Readers are swept into the suggragette movement, the gilded fancy-pants world (complete with the benefits and pitfalls of wealth) and into the charity work in Jane Addams' settlement house and the rallies of D.L. Moody. Violet's way of looking at and interacting with the world is so unique. This book had me laughing out loud in several places. I listened to the Audible version and highly recommend it. The voices were all done so well and added to the depth and hilarity.

I was entertained, educated, and moved by this book. Worth another read or listen.

The Pursuit of Happiness

Another amazing book by Lynn Austin. Loved, Loved, Loved it! You can't go wrong with her books! The is a delightful and humorous book about a 20 year old from the late 1800's who travels to Chicago to visit her Grandmother and three great-aunts. Each aunt has a different idea of what kind of man Violet Rose should or should not marry. This book could be categorized in so many different ways. It is historical fiction, inspirational Christian, comedy, romance and mystery all wrapped up in one. A must read!

Delightful

Loved from start to finish. I enjoyed a change of pace with a humorous story while learning history about women's suffrage movement and the plight of the immigrants in the late 1800's. The plot twists lasted through to the last chapter.

Fantastic story and brilliant narration!

I loved this book!! Entertaining and thought provoking with a very insightful look at life in the time of women’s rights and expectations.

Lynn Austin has not only the art of storytelling, but picking narrators who can bring it to life.

What!?! Wow...really????

I have listened to 4 Lynn Austin books in the last month alone. I love how she writes. So when I started with A Proper Pursuit I felt disappointed. I almost return the book by Chapter 2. It was so different from her others. I am so glad I continued to listen... it is now my favorite!!!! Captivating, funny, and educational to boot. I am not a review writer but I had to encourage others to read this awesome book.
