About this listen

A proud and spirited woman whose life was stolen from her... A man of secrets accused of a terrible crime... In a place of new beginnings their destinies are joined—in a gloriously romantic new work from the incomparable storyteller.

The fiery and outspoken adopted daughter of one of England's most formidable women, Shemaine O'Hearn has made powerful enemies. And now her adversaries have found a way to remove the hot-blooded beauty from her life of privilege: by falsely convicting Shemaine of thievery and sending her in shackles to America, where she is to be sold in indentured servitude to the highest bidder.

In a bustling port city in the colony of Virginia, she becomes the servant of Gage Thornton—a shipbuilder with a young child in need of a nanny. And despite whispered rumors condemning the handsome widower for the untimely death of his wife, Shemaine cannot ignore her desire for this caring, generous and enigmatic stranger who silently aches with his growing need for her—even as grave peril reaches out from across a vast ocean to threaten their flowering love.

It was good except…

Woodiwiss writes romance like no one else! Detail, character development and storytelling are her trademark. So where did it go wrong for me? Physical beauty and sexual attraction between the MC’s felt unbelievable and there was way too much of it. The honeymoon and other numerous encounters quite graphic, it was uncomfortably like being in the room with the couple! This was well written, I just wish there had been fewer sexual descriptives and more storyline as in her earlier works. Fortunately it did improve in that area as the book progressed. The excellent narration gets 5 stars!

Perfection

The setting, story, language, romance, etc. This experience cannot be improved upon. If you love historical romance and run more traditional/old-fashioned in your values/morals/tastes, this is for you: love, marriage, and fidelity all rolled up into an exciting, engaging adventure!

Love this author, liked the story

I had never read this book when it first came out. The story is good, the narrator is good, the voice for Gage is not my favorite. A lot of her books I love! This one I like, it’s a one listen for me. Best listening to all.

One of my favorite Romance novels!

I read this book years ago, and was so excited to see it on Audible! The book is just as good as I remember, and I loved every moment of it. The narrator was good, but something about it bothered me, I think it was the Cain voice. Even with that, I enjoyed it immensely and am glad I have it in my library. Every bit worth the credit!

I am a fan!

Although I think this is one of her lesser novels, I enjoyed it in paperback years ago and I enjoyed it on Audible. Not all of her details are accurate about the time period, but it does not take away from a provocative storyline.

So glad to have this book finally available

Petals on the River was the first book I ever read was Kathleen Woodiwiss. However, that copy was out of print for many years and I didn’t know when it will become available as a commercial audio book again. Their was version from The Library for the Blind. However, I really didn’t care for the narrator. This new version is great. I liked all the character voices. This is book that I will read again and again and I’m glad to have it in my library. If you are looking for a great historical romance then grab this book!
