About this listen

Our world is dying. Every century, the High Fae venture past the magical veil in search of a shifter to compete as the champion in the trials of their Inner Kingdom. Only a shifter who completes the trials can unlock the healing powers of The Heart of Valdor, a magical stone that has the power to save our world. For five hundred years, no shifter has been victorious or returned alive. The dark magic of the wilt is steadily growing, devouring our world piece by piece with each passing day. The fate of all fae, shifters, and humans is at stake. And somehow... this task has fallen to me. Skylar Cathal is a twenty-two-year-old half-human, half-shifter with a curious mind and knack for bending the rules. Gilen Warrick, Skylar's childhood friend and the next Alpha of the Solace pack, wants more than just her friendship, but fate has a will of its own. When Skylar is marked as the shifter champion, she must overcome her darkest fears to leave her home and those she loves behind. Daxton Aegaeon, High Fae Prince of Silver Meadows, has sworn to protect Skylar as his ward, but only she can protect her heart.

THIS!! READ THIS! LISTEN!

Take this off your TBR, NOW! The storyline, the characters, the development of it all is intriguing, fulfilling, gripping, and a twist on the “norm” of fantasy. I listened to this on audible, and even at 2.5 I didn’t love the narrator, but the plot will have you wanting more regardless. I’m waiting IMPATIENTLY for the next book; and despite knowing there are still two more to come even after, I’m still at the edge of my seat excited. Epic High Fantasy. Shifters. World Building. All of the things. Some spice this one with the promise of MORE spice coming.

Great Slow-Burn Romance

If you liked Fourth Wing, Acotar, and Hunger Games and enjoy slow burn shifter romance this is the book for you. excellent! Only thinfg I wish was that it started covering the "trial" instead of waiting for a later book.

...there were not any trials in this book...

Initially, I had high hopes for "A Trial of Fate", but unfortunately, the narrative fell short of expectations as it primarily served as a precursor to the actual trials.
Key observations include: I appreciated the unique introduction of the protagonists via an arrow. However, the term "Spitfire" was overly repeated. The Queen's character drew parallels with Amarantha from ACOTAR, particularly in her dynamic with Dax, reminiscent of Rhys. I remain uncertain about the protagonist's shifted form, considering possibilities such as a Phoenix, Dragon, Thunderbird, or aquatic creature maybe?. The conclusion, involving the fallen, left me ambivalent about continuing the series.

Mostly good

Up until the last quarter of the book it was really good! It got kind of predictable at the end. Overall it was good.
