About this listen

My high school bully is now my fake boyfriend.

Glenna: Cash Wall has been messing with me since junior high. Nuisance stuff, mostly. Name calling. Pranks. Honestly, he’s nowhere near the worst of my problems. Back in school, I had bigger fish to fry, and now, I’ve got a “scarlet letter” situation going on. The whole town hates me. For some reason, Cash offers himself up as my knight in shining armor. So now, my former tormentor is my fake boyfriend. What could possibly go wrong?

Cash: Glenna Dobbs thinks I’m an idiot, and she’s mostly right. I hunt. Fish. I go mudding. I’m not a “brain” type. I’m not really a “thinker”. But I ain’t stupid. When I see that Glenna needs a rescue, I’m in. Because Glenna doesn’t know that I’ve been in this whole time, and once I’ve got her, I’m not letting go.

Against a Wall is a small-town enemies-to-lovers romance. It is the second book in the Stonecut County series, but it can be listened to as a stand-alone. Intended for adult listeners.

Sweet small town romance

Love the book, love the readers… didn’t see Cash with a country twang until hearing the narration but now I can’t unhear it!

great listen

I really liked this enemies-to-lovers book.
The characters were fun and obviously had some miscommunications in their past, and the hurt was real and understandable.
The dynamic between them, once they let go was explosive and sexy, and much fun to read.
Both narrators did a good job with this book.

Good Book!

This is the second book in the Stonecut County Series, a small-town enemies-to-lovers romance. Glenna and Cash are interesting characters. I liked this fake relationship romance. Scarlett Everdeen and Christopher Rourke did a good job bringing this story to life. #StoryOrigin

Against a Wall

I love Ms. Wells' books and writing style, but did not like this one as much as some of her other books. I had a hard time connecting with the characters. I could not stand Cash and found him unlikeable. But, as the book progressed, eventually he grew on me in this enemies to lovers story. This book had lots of humor, which I love. Scarlett Everdeen and Christopher Rourke did a very good job with the narration. I received this free copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Great read

Cate C. Wells is always a sure bet for a great story that has an unique spin on a common trope. The performance was great by both narrators. I especially enjoyed Scarlett Everdeen’s narration.

Addictive, small town read!

“You like to run your mouth & tear a woman down—I’ve got other skills.”

This book has such a hold on me that I want to move to Stonecut County. It features a strong female lead, a toxic ex I loved to hate, an absolutely adorable small town with a very passionate, close-knit population, and more. And it was sort of a enemies … to friends (reluctant friends on 1 side), to lovers to more. And completely you can experience the evolution into more—it’s so well done.

📸 Small town.
⛰️ Abüsive ex.
📸 Strong family ties.
⛰️Mean girls.
📸 Light (memories of) bullying.
⛰️ Loveable secondary canine character.
📸 Fake relationship.
⛰️ A bit of stalking.
📸 Light suspense.

There was a bit of suspense that I’d have liked to see wrapped up I’ll draw my own conclusions there.

I liked it!

Glenna and Cash has been enemies for years, but one day, when she (or rather her dad) has the whole town turned against her, Cash is there to help her out by becoming her fake boyfriend. Glenna is reluctant at first, but agrees.

This is a new to me author, and really liked this story! I cringed a few times, but it also made me laugh. It’s silly sometimes but also touched deeper emotions. Cash surprised me in a good way. I LOVED the epilogue, it was hilarious but so very sweet!

I liked both narrators.

Childhood friends to enemies fake date to lovers

Against a Wall fits within one of my very least favorite subgenres – bully romance. ‘Hurt people hurt people’ may be true, but I get enough of that in my real life. I don’t particularly want to read about it in a romance. Except when Cate C. Wells writes it, and then I read it. Wells makes me care that Cash always had a thing for Glenna and was locked into a pattern of seeking negative attention that he didn’t know how to get out of. When Cash’s hunting client accidentally shoots her, towns people start congratulating Cash as if it were intentional and a good thing. Cash then proposes that Glenna fake date him so that his popularity mitigates the hostility the town has been feeling. Of course, Cash plans to turn the fake dating into real dating.

I liked that neither Cash nor Glenna become different people, but they change the way they look at each other which then reframes their antagonistic past. As with Kellum, Cash takes off his blinders about the Sheriff and apologizes for not seeing what he should have seen sooner. This one is my favorite in part because of the Cash’s best friend and the dogs.

I’m not sure I can adequately explain why Cate C. Wells works for me. She centers characters I don’t generally want to read – motorcycle clubs, cops, bullies, mafia, and so on. But she makes her characters so human and compelling and she isn’t ra ra-ing for small town America as a place where the good people live. She doesn’t burn down the world to build a better society, but she does let her glance linger on built in and perpetuated power structures. There’s something about the way she lets her characters be messy, difficult, and unapologetically their own selves that works for me.

Made me laugh and shake me head!

Cash Wall and Glenda Dobbs will do whatever it takes to protect the one’s they love. I laughed so much throughout this audiobook. Cash might have more layers than he’s given credit for but he does come off as a jerk! I’m going to look for more from this author!

Against a Wall!

This is a small town romance about Glenna and Cash. This is kind of a bully/enemies to fake to so much more story. Cash was definitely not what I anticipated but so much more. He has had a huge crush on Glenna the whole time but she did not like him at all. He would do things that were mean but it was a cover. You cannot help fall for Cash. Glenna was harder to like she needed to grow up some. I like how the story developed.
