About this listen

A skewering of the American underbelly by the New York Times best-selling author of Seven Deadly Sins, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Heaven, and You're Making Me Hate You

The always outspoken hard rock vocalist Corey Taylor begins America 51 with a reflection on what his itinerant youth and frequent worldwide travels with his multiplatinum bands Slipknot and Stone Sour have taught him about what it means to be an American in an increasingly unstable world.

He examines the way America sees itself, specifically with regard to the propaganda surrounding America's origins (like a heavy-metal Howard Zinn), while also celebrating the quirks and behavior that make a true-blue American. Taylor likewise takes a look at how the world views us, and his findings should come as a surprise to no one. But behind Taylor's ranting and raving is a thoughtful and intelligent consideration, and even a sadness, of what America is compared to what it could and should be.

Expertly balancing humor, outrage, and disbelief, Taylor examines the rotting core of America, evaluating everything from politics and race relations to modern family dynamics, millennials, and "man buns." No element of what constitutes America is safe from his adept and scathing eye. Continuing the wave of moral outrage begun in You're Making Me Hate You, Taylor flawlessly skewers contemporary America in his own signature style.

Another CT book, another interesting listen

Would you consider the audio edition of America 51 to be better than the print version?

As with most of his books, which are well written, having him do the narration brings out something more in the material. I connect better with his books when I've listened to the audiobook.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

SOOOO RELEVANT

This has been sitting in my library for awhile, but as I am listening to his words and passion, it is so reflective for 2020 and the current administration, the riots and racism, the police etc. The only thing he's missing is a prediction of the current pandemic. Corey Taylor is unapologetic, harsh, crude at times, but REAL. It's nice to hear a "star" be so humble and verbose about his thoughts, feelings, history etc. My teenage and early 20s children also love listening/reading his commentary. It gives up great talking points and, I believe, a way for them to look through their "glasses" with new ideas and thoughts, thus making their world a little bit more open and not as blinded. I would encourage real people to read/listen with an open mind, and just get used to how he presents his theory...personally I really don't care :) Love CMFT!

Interesting political and social insight

Corey Taylor is one of my favorite people on earth. Ever book he writes contains a vast array of emotion, humor, compassion, and frustration. This book, like Corey's previous compositions, is an interesting referendum on political and social issues we face today, and it comes from a man with no shortage of real world experience and wisdom. You won't agree with everything he says, but you don't have to. Just calm the f*ck down and take it for what it is... one man's opinion. Thanks Corey, for everything you do.
