About this listen

He left KoRn to help himself. He went back to help others. And along the way, he nearly lost everything.

A life-changing spiritual awakening freed Brian "Head" Welch from a stranglehold of drugs and alcohol and prompted him to leave the highly successful nu-metal band KoRn in 2005. What followed was a decade-long trial by fire, from the perils of fathering a teen lost in depression and self-mutilation to the harsh realities of playing solo and surviving the shattering betrayal of a trusted friend. In this intensely inspiring redemption saga, perhaps most inspiring is Brian's radical decision to rejoin KoRn and reconcile with the tribe of people he once considered family in the metal music scene.

Brian returned to his musical roots with a clear head and a devoted heart. Though his story is wild, hilarious, and deeply poignant, the message is simple: God will love you into the freedom of being yourself as long as you keep the relationship going and never, ever quit.

Brian is the type of Christian Christ wants us all to be. Jesus doesn't care about appearances, where we are or where we spend our time or who we hang with. He sure doesn't want us Christians doing the judging for him. Sadly, that is exactly what happens with many people Christians or not. It is so easy to point a finger and condemn those that are different in any way. Jesus loves us all I matter how we fail Him and it is because we fail him that we need Him.

Real Christianity.

When I listened to the first book by Brian, I wished he had narrated it. Listening to this book with Brian narrating it, he had no enthusiasm for the most part. I just wish it sounded like he wanted to be reading it. Overall, it is a good story about real life struggles and shows that celebrities don't live fairy tale lives. They are human with real human problems and the power of God can truely change your life.

Great inspirational story.

Would you listen to With My Eyes Wide Open again? Why?

Yes. Brian's narration was at once soothing and captivating. His story is so honest and full of heartbreaking as well as uplifting stories.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved Brian's honesty. He doesn't come across as a spoiled rockstar, nor does he get too preachy about the religion thing.

What does Brian "Head" Welch bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Being the author of the book, his voice - soothing and firm - makes a very positive difference. I loved listening to Brian.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. And I did.

Any additional comments?

I'm not religious at all. As an agnostic who is a semi-fan of Korn (really like some of their stuff, don't care for others) I was curious to learn more about what made Brian leave the band back then. I was prepared for a overly preachy book about Jesus stuff, but luckily this is not the case here. I've always had issues with born-again Christians who live a life of drugs and devil-may-care actions, and then feel bad about it and hope spouting bible verses fixes everything. To me, being a true Christian means certain things, and born-again types just don't fit MY definition. That said, if you feel the same, you'll want to put your own feelings aside when listening to this book in order to enjoy it.

Captivating Even for Atheist Korn Fans

I can’t believe I’m just getting to read/hear this book! I enjoyed it more than words can describe. Brian telling his own story was the best

Mind blown

Being a fan of Brian I bought the book not thinking anything was gonna change my way of thinking. Really appreciated his and Jenneah's story. Jenneah's note at the end made me tear up and got a knot in my throat. Brian's note made me cry! I usually roll my eyes when people pray but I hung on every word and just cried! THANK YOU! GOD BLESS BOTH BRIAN AND JENNEAH!

I enjoyed hearing Brian's story of change in his own voice. I'm not even a Korn music fan but his testimony is raw, real and life giving.

I enjoyed listening to Brian tell his own tale. This part of his life was just as intense as the start in his first book. As a fellow Christ follower I pray that whoever reads or listens to this book gets to experience God's love in their life. The reading by his daughter in the end brought tears to my eyes & chills to me. God bless her for being such a strong young woman.

Love love love this book!
