About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

An Infamous Army is read by Kristin Atherton, who appears in Waterloo Road.

The Battle of Waterloo. A heart-racing tale of adventure, love and fate against the backdrop of one of the most decisive battles in history by one of the greatest and best-selling romantic novelists of all time.

In 1815, beneath the aegis of the Army of Occupation, Brussels is the gayest town in Europe. And the widow Lady Barbara Childe, renowned for being as outrageous as she is beautiful, is at the centre of all that is fashionable and light-hearted. When she meets Charles Audley, dashing aide-de-camp to the great Duke of Wellington himself, her joie de vivre knows no bounds - until the eve of the fateful Battle of Waterloo....

Georgette Heyer was the creator - greatest practitioner - of the Regency romance, and An Infamous Army shows why she has won the hearts of a whole new audience with her sweeping historical fiction.

Georgette Heyers' characters rival Jane Austens with humour and awkward drama connected to how the elite lived during the Regency era. Georgette Heyers characters are more edgy than Jane Austens. Be sure to read the Alistar - Audley tetralogy in order. These old shades, Devils club, Regency Buck, and then Infamous Army. My favorite of the 4 is Regency Buck, but Infamous Army is a close 2nd. Loved them all. A Romance with a war story that brings passions and fears alive. The only thing I do not like about her writing is she does not go beyond the engagement in many of her books. That is just me. I want a wrap up of their situation after they marry.

Lovely Historical Romance

Great except for 2 straight hours of battle scenes, but great reading and plot overall

More battles than expected

I enjoyed having a small romance surrounding the battle of Waterloo. It was very thorough and it made the battle come to life c

This is a great book about the battle of Waterloo

I have read this book several times and the audio version has added a depth of character and events. The storyline of impending war and the interaction of the Avon and Worth families from previous novels was endearing. The narrator was exceptionally adept, keeping the characters identifiable throughout the entire book through their range of emotions.

Very clever reintroduction of the characters from previous books blending into the atmosphere existing in Brussels on the brink of war. Heyer’s knowledge of stages of the battle, her development of the characters as they rise to meet the disasters affecting their families. As always her historical knowledge is very well researched. I read this first as an ebook but found the audio version so well produced that it gave greater depth. Beautifully read. Congratulations!

Extraordinary account of the Battle of Waterloo

This is my favorite book of hers. The narrator did a great job bringing all the characters to life and describing the battle. I am thrilled that this is now part of my library - I will listen to it frequently. Thank you, to all who produced this wonderful audiobook.

My favorite of all her books

History comes alive as the people in Brussels nervously anticipate Napoleon’s invasion against the armies of the Dutch, the English and the Prussians in Georgette Heyer’s novel. Meticulously researched, Heyer’s novel builds a vivid description of the war while drawing the reader into the personal lives of both fictional and historical characters.

While none of Georgette’s characters match Margaret Mitchell’s, her research into the battle of Waterloo transports us there as Thackeray chose not to do. Wellington is a magnificent figure precisely because he was not consciously magnificent (shades here of War and Peace). Well worth reading if you care as much about history as Regency romance.
