About this listen

Beautiful, popular, and fortunate, Anna Karenina is an upright wife and mother. But her passionless marriage to a senior statesman leads her into the arms of Count Alexey Vronsky. The dashing cavalry officer stokes in her something exciting and defiant. In abandoning the rules of her noble station, she's aware of the risks: a degraded reputation and the hostile recriminations of St. Petersburg society. But there are even greater stakes as Anna follows desires both romantic and carnal, emancipating and destructive.

The embodiment of the clash between Russia's old-world tradition and its liberal reform, Leo Tolstoy's willful heroine remains one of the most notorious and tragic in all of world literature.

Revised edition: Previously published as Anna Karenina, this edition of Anna Karenina (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

Critic reviews

“Elizabeth Knowelden skillfully narrates this lengthy Russian novel with gravitas.... Knowelden's narration captures the richly emotional nature of this literary work, providing clear representations of the many characters and making them come to life for the listener.... This novel is long and in the wrong hands - or rather, voice - could be a chore. With Knowelden's performance, the experience is a true delight.” (AudioFile Magazine)

Way too much going on

Major spoilers here, so if you really think you want to read this book, skip this review. But hey, if you think Citizen Kane is an amazing movie, you might like this because this is supposedly one of the greatest works of literature ever written, and I feel the same way about both of them.

The main character isn’t even in the last part of the story, and frankly, it would have been a much better book if it weren’t about Anna at all. I would have much preferred a book about Kitty and Levin. Good luck remembering who tf everyone is and how they are related or know each other though. And what names they have. This feels like every thought Tolstoy had about religion, commerce, and marriage wrapped into one book. I’d love to get the hours of my life back I wasted on this.

Love it!

One of my favorite books! I read it back in high school, but I understood it better now with a few decades of life under my belt. The reader was wonderful, and I never confused the characters because of her skill in differentiating them vocally. I would absolutely recommend to anybody wanting to get to know this classic.

Well worth the investment!

I've wanted to venture into Tolstoy's novels for a long time, but I'd been scared off by all the "War and Peace" jokes.
Anna Karenina is the one to start with, an audio version makes it much more attainable, and this performance by Elizabeth Knowelden is superb!

Good narrator.

pity the story is so preachy and full of heresy.Dostoyevsky is much better than Tolstoy.
