About this listen

This is a full-length novel set between Windburn and Rootbound. However, to avoid spoilers, the author highly recommends you listen to it after hearing Rootbound.

From the USA Today best-selling series comes a glimpse into the life and mind of a character surrounded in mystery....

My name is Ash, and I am an elemental. As an ender, it is my place to protect the royal family at all costs. Despite being the best ender our world has ever beheld, I have failed time and again as the personal sacrifices continue to mount.

Lark has been banished to the desert by her father, who is blind to the manipulation he has again fallen prey to. To bring about justice, I must seek out and destroy the one who intentionally wields her powers to bring pain to my people.

Cassava’s death will finally free us from the dark cloud her reign of terror has surrounded us in. This is what I believe to be true, and I will seek her out with only one intended outcome. The reality, however, is much more complicated than my beliefs.

When lies turn to truths, and enemies to allies, can I still find my way back to who I once was? Uncertainty makes me hesitant, but I can not give up. For justice. For Lark. No matter the sacrifice.

I love hearing the story from another perspective. Ash is such a great character in the elemental series, and just as strong and follows his convictions like Lark. He has to deal with lies and schemes and gets the short end of the stick, but does not really give up. He’s Larks true match. It was such a great story and awesome narration! More please..

Ash is the best!

I absolutely loved listening to Ash’s POV! To see what he’s thinking , and scheming behind the scenes. It was interesting to see how he thinks, and how he is as a individual. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the narrator. Great voice and I felt like he certainly was the voice for Ash.

Loved his POV

I loved hearing Ash's story. It filled out the series where Lark's story couldn't. I loved Norm! There was action and some twists. I'm so curious now how this story concludes. The narrator was great, but it took a bit to get used to him.

Exciting!

I have liked Ash from the first moment he was introduced in the Elemental series. Like many in love he reacted when he should have thought things out a little more. His lack of foresight leads him on an unintended adventure filled with lies, half truths, and royal machinations. The story is fabulous. The new character Norm was a a great humorous addition. The narrator did a nice job, but I wish she would have stuck with Ms. Fortgang...Ash just doesn’t sound like Ash in the previous stories.

Ash!!

Ash wishes to remove Cassava from the living so Lark will be safe. On his quest he meets a Yette named Norm, gets caught in a snow avalanche, loses Peta, runs afoul of some witches, sets Raven up with one very powerful witch, realizes he hates Talon, stabs Cassava and discovers not all he believes is indeed correct. What all must a man to do to save his love?

Ash's search for Cassava is destined for the birds

Note: I write my reviews as I listen to the book

I like the rich depth of this narrator’s voice, but I had not at all expected the swap after the previous 5 books. I get it, I realize it’s a male’s viewpoint, but definitely didn’t expect it because I’d heard the male viewpoints done by Lauren up to this point. After the initial shock though, I must admit that the choice of narrator is quite fitting for Ash.
The start of this book backtracks a bit to when Lark was banished to the desert so I’m guessing this will kind of follow alongside the story-telling of Rootbound.
Gah! Nope, I don’t like his version of Peta’s voice! Ack! I hope he doesn’t have to read her voice much in this one.
I do like the way the story was written, but I think I got too used to Lauren Fortgang being Peta’s voice so I’m not so fond of Michael Axtell’s voice for her. He does give Norm a fitting voice though.
As with Peta, it isn’t like re-listening to the same story. I got chills multiple times and insights into Ash that you don’t get through the other books so far.
2 hours remaining and it sounds like a different male voice reading. It was a little odd and disconcerting. Less than an hour left and his voice for Peta changed too. While I enjoy the book and the overall storyline, I struggle to like this narrator’s many voices, particularly the female ones. This book is well worth the read. Lot's of insights and information you don't get otherwise. There's also a little of, I believe, Pamela's beginnings in here. That was intriguing.

Good story, but the change in voices was a shock

Another great book by Shanon. I love this series. I only wish the next book was on audible so I could see what happens next faster. I will have to wait until I get off work. Read this series!! You will not be disappointed!!!

Shannon Mayer never disappoints!

This book brings in Ash's side of the story. It filled in a lot of gaps from Lark's story

Love to hear Ash's side of the story.

So I honestly think I would have preferred listening to this one before rootbound because chronologically it is before it but it was ok either way. This is Shannon at her finest who dont know which way to go or who to believe!

More and more twists
