About this listen

Masterful #1 New York Times bestselling author Tami Hoag is back with a riveting, emotionally powerful thriller!

Small-town labels are hard to shake. Hometown hero. Fallen angel. Can anyone ever escape their past?

A murder victim dumped at the dead end of a lonely country road, face and hands obliterated by a shotgun blast, is not the way sheriff’s detective Nick Fourcade wants to start his week. His only lead takes him to the family of a hometown hero suddenly gone missing. Marc Mercier left his home for a weekend hunting trip and hasn’t been seen since.

Meanwhile, sheriff’s detective Annie Broussard begins her first day back on the job after suffering a brutal attack by taking on the case of B’Lynn Fontenot, a mother desperate to find her grown son, a recovering drug addict. Robbie Fontenot has been missing for eight days, but the local police have no interest in the case, telling B’Lynn that an adult has the right to disappear, and a missing addict is no big surprise. But B’Lynn swears her son was turning his life around. Sympathetic to a mother’s anguish, Annie agrees to help B’Lynn, knowing she’s about to start a turf war with the city police.

As Annie searches for Robbie Fontenot and Nick investigates the disappearance of Marc Mercier, it quickly becomes apparent that nothing is as it seems in the lives of either man. And it’s still not clear whether either—or neither—of them might be the unidentified murder victim. Old jealousies and fresh deceits, family loyalties gone wrong and love turned sour all lay a twisting trail that leads deep into the Louisiana swamp, endangering all who cross the path of a bad liar.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Hillary Huber delivers a stellar performance as she creates the impression of a full-cast production.… Huber seamlessly brings the male and female characters to life, expertly handling the Cajun accents and French phrases sprinkled throughout. She skillfully projects the heroes and villains—along with those who are not what they seem. While this audiobook is part of a series, Hoag provides enough backstory for it to be enjoyed as a stand-alone.” AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner

“Hoag perfectly captures the Cajun dialect and way of life the dark, steamy atmosphere of the Louisiana bayous, the claustrophobia of small-town life, lost dreams; dashed hopes, and tragic lives in this five-star read with a powerful, sucker-punch ending.” Booklist (starred review)

“Hoag sketches Robby, Marc, and B’Lynn with remarkable depth and sensitivity, and keeps the plot moving at a brisk clip through many twists and turns. This will please series fans and newcomers alike.” Publishers Weekly

“A Real Page Turner”

I waited for this book to be released in audio for some time. It was worth the wait! Tami Hoag has a skill in describing the surrounding landscape which makes the reader feel like they are there. Loved the main characters, Annie & Niick, the third book in this series. The narration was excellent. Listened to the story at every opportunity & it did not disappoint. Hoping for a fourth book with Annie & Nick in the near future!!!

Could have been just another police procedural novel but Tami Hoag spins such rich stories with characters that touch the heart, i consider perfection

A good story. Not her best.

This is the third of a series. A good plot. Not much regarding the personal relationships between/ among the cops that made the first two of the series so good. So I'm a bit disappointed.

intricate story

Having lived in that exact part of the country, I wish they'd either gotten someone with an actual Cajun accent or scrapped the idea all together. NEVER, living in Lafayette Louisiana did I hear it pronounced the way she pronounced it.

The story was good and at the end so sad. addiction, family dysfunction and bad choices often end sadly.

Narration was horrible

if you're going to try to mimic an accent, you should at least try find an authentic accent to copy. It was like listening to nails scratching a blackboard. Would have been better to just read with no accent.
