About this listen

Masterful #1 New York Times bestselling author Tami Hoag is back with a riveting, emotionally powerful thriller!

Small-town labels are hard to shake. Hometown hero. Fallen angel. Can anyone ever escape their past?

A murder victim dumped at the dead end of a lonely country road, face and hands obliterated by a shotgun blast, is not the way sheriff’s detective Nick Fourcade wants to start his week. His only lead takes him to the family of a hometown hero suddenly gone missing. Marc Mercier left his home for a weekend hunting trip and hasn’t been seen since.

Meanwhile, sheriff’s detective Annie Broussard begins her first day back on the job after suffering a brutal attack by taking on the case of B’Lynn Fontenot, a mother desperate to find her grown son, a recovering drug addict. Robbie Fontenot has been missing for eight days, but the local police have no interest in the case, telling B’Lynn that an adult has the right to disappear, and a missing addict is no big surprise. But B’Lynn swears her son was turning his life around. Sympathetic to a mother’s anguish, Annie agrees to help B’Lynn, knowing she’s about to start a turf war with the city police.

As Annie searches for Robbie Fontenot and Nick investigates the disappearance of Marc Mercier, it quickly becomes apparent that nothing is as it seems in the lives of either man. And it’s still not clear whether either—or neither—of them might be the unidentified murder victim. Old jealousies and fresh deceits, family loyalties gone wrong and love turned sour all lay a twisting trail that leads deep into the Louisiana swamp, endangering all who cross the path of a bad liar.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Hillary Huber delivers a stellar performance as she creates the impression of a full-cast production.… Huber seamlessly brings the male and female characters to life, expertly handling the Cajun accents and French phrases sprinkled throughout. She skillfully projects the heroes and villains—along with those who are not what they seem. While this audiobook is part of a series, Hoag provides enough backstory for it to be enjoyed as a stand-alone.” AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner

“Hoag perfectly captures the Cajun dialect and way of life the dark, steamy atmosphere of the Louisiana bayous, the claustrophobia of small-town life, lost dreams; dashed hopes, and tragic lives in this five-star read with a powerful, sucker-punch ending.” Booklist (starred review)

“Hoag sketches Robby, Marc, and B’Lynn with remarkable depth and sensitivity, and keeps the plot moving at a brisk clip through many twists and turns. This will please series fans and newcomers alike.” Publishers Weekly

Another good read

If you like Tami Hoag, you’ll like this book. The characters are as you’d expect from the author, and some you’ll already know from previous works. An easy read. Some twists I didn’t see coming. It’s not my favorite Hoag, but I would read this again.

Beautiful story

I just discovered Tami Hoag and have been binging on her books. This series is my favorite and this book in particular. The sensitive and compassionate way she depicts addiction is beautiful and I hope many learn from her words as they enjoy them.

Plot had nice twists.

Not certain this novel was as good as previous books by the author. Although excellent narration it seems the plot kept repeating old ground.

Everything about this beautiful intense journey

This is so beautifully written. Although the story is truly heartbreaking and powerful, while still recognizing life and choices and consequences it is truly written and spoken so much understanding, compassion and recognition of where the many turns and choices in one’s journey of life. I highly recommend this powerful intense and compassionate writing. Well done. Thank you Ms. Hoag for sharing your amazing creative written talent and Ms. Huber for a brilliant narration.

Outstanding character development

Another knockout from Tami Hoag. What took this one to another level for me, was the character of B’Lynn Fontenot, the desperate mother, trying to get the police to take her seriously- that her son is missing and in trouble. The trouble is, that he’s an opiate addict with a record.
Tami Hoag has written the most accurate, compassionate depiction of what it’s really like to have a child lost to long term addiction.
The mystery for Nick Fourcade and Annie Broussard had just enough twists and turns.
My only quibble is with the narrator’s sad attempt at doing Nick’s Louisiana accent. It’s…not good.
