About this listen

Nominated, Gumshoe Award, 2008

A decade postmilitary, Jack Reacher has an ATM card and the clothes on his back—no phone, no ties, and no address. But now a woman from his old unit has done the impossible. From Chicago, Frances Neagley finds Reacher using a signal only the eight members of their elite team of army investigators would know. She tells him a terrifying story about the brutal death of a man they both served with. Soon Reacher is reuniting with the survivors of his old team, scrambling to raise the living, bury the dead, and connect the dots in a mystery that is growing darker by the day.

In a world of bad luck and trouble, when someone targets Jack Reacher and his team, they'd better be ready for what comes right back at them.

Critic reviews

“The truth about Reacher gets better and better. . . . This series [is] utterly addictive.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Jack Reacher is today’s James Bond, a thriller hero we can’t get enough of. I read every one as soon as it appears.”—Ken Follett

“Reacher is the stuff of myth. . . . One of this century’s most original, tantalizing pop-fiction heroes.”—The Washington Post

Most of the book is learning about and trying to solve the mystery, which was ok, not great. But I enjoyed it because I like hanging out with Reacher. Then the last two hours were great - lots of fun, well done tough guy action.

Again you need to suspend disbelief for a few things. Most of that I didn’t mind, but I had a little trouble with this one. I found it hard to believe that Naegley with all her contacts didn’t even try to use a hacker to break the password protection on a flash drive. Instead the group was guessing passwords which resulted in erasing info on two flash drives.

The ending was excellent and feel good.

Not much action until the end.

Another great Jack Reacher story. The story was a bit complicated and as usual you could not predict the outcome. There were a couple of scenes that were somewhat unbelievable and I did find myself thinking "there is no way anyone would come to that conclusion". Doesn't matter though, it was still a good book.

Could there be a real Reacher out there?

I like the Jack Reacher franchise and this was actually the first book from the series I listened to and have been hooked ever since! Dick Hill is the voice of Reacher and hope that Lee never changes the reader.

Reacher leaves no comrades behind and his "code" for justice is consistent throughout the series. All of our heroes need flaws in order to make them identifiable--in Reacher's case it is his weakness for the fairer sex.

Get this book--you will not be disappointed.

good story line, but a bit shorter than many Reacher stories. overall average for the series, but always good

Nuff said.
Dick Hill is terrific for male characters, but his female "voice" is painful to listen to over & over. He gives them a weak southern accent. It was fine for one character, but it fails when used repeatedly.
If a female reader would do those parts I'd enjoy the Audio experience much much more!!!

Solid & entertaining Reacher story!

Good action, typical Reacher, a bit overdone on the numbers. Nothing spectacular. Just decent Reacher. Excellent Dick Hill narration.

Just another Reacher

This is another very exciting Lee Child read. As alway it is one I would recommend.

Another great Reacher book

Would you consider the audio edition of Bad Luck and Trouble to be better than the print version?

Absolutely. Dick Hill's intonations and phrasings give more depth to the characters, underscore the dry humor -- and overall make the plot more interesting.

What did you like best about this story?

The existential hero, who is steadfast in his loyalty and his retribution, creating a bit of fairness in our unfair world.

You do not mess with Special Investigations.
