Publisher's summary
A dark night. A darker secret.
On a cold, dark night, two cars collide …
Inside the vehicle at fault, Jennifer Ashby survives with barely a scratch. In the wreckage of the second, the occupants are not so lucky. Jennifer’s good character helps her escape jail, but she is traumatised by the event.
Desperate for a change, and with her marriage buckling under the stress, she convinces her husband Jon to move to the beautiful but wild Daintree region, far away from family and friends.
As Jon spends long hours at his new job and Jennifer makes plans to absolve her lingering guilt, cracks begin to form in their idyllic new life. Will the shadow of their past continue to haunt them? Will their dark secret be exposed?
A captivating domestic thriller for fans of Sally Hepworth and Liane Moriarty.
'Thoroughly absorbing, sharply plotted ... a formidable new talent in the twisty domestic thriller genre.' - Nicola Moriarty
'Propulsive and gripping.' - Ali Lowe
'Taut and atmospheric.' - Petronella McGovern

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

But after things went wrong with one couple, Simone was forced to go into hiding. Simone is now Mary, a mild-mannered woman who doesn't raise her voice or get angry, meaning nobody would suspect her of being capable of the things she used to do for a living. the narrator did an excellent job so much better than AI voices that it's a shamr to even compare them.
well they never did an excellent job the story is rather boring I had to listen to it at 1.2 time speed the author takes way too long to get to the point the only reason I finished is because I listened to stories like this is background noise while I'm at work the ending was very disappointing I'm not sure I would recommend it

Good twist but main premise obvious .
Knew the big clincher from the insert. One good twist.
For a free book, I was thrilled and did listen to end.
