About this listen

Every house has secrets. But not all of them stay buried forever . . .

When the Burgess family move into their "forever" home, it seems like they are set for many happy years together at their new address. Steph and Grant, along with their children, Charlie and Amelia, settle into their new surroundings quickly. But then they receive an unexpected visit from a couple who claim to have lived in the house before.

They wish to come in and have a look around for old time's sake. Seeming pleasant and plausible, Steph invites them in. And that's when things begin to change. It's not long after the peculiar visit when the homeowners begin to find evidence of the past all around their new home as they redecorate. But it's the discovery of a hidden wall containing several troubling messages that really sends Steph into a spin.

After digging into the history of the house a little more, she learns it is connected to a shocking crime from the past. A crime that still remains unsolved . . .

Narration prevented completion

I just couldn’t get through the narration. I had to stop after chapter four. The female read fast and without pause or punctuation. The male talked fast and with a mouth full of marbles. If the story was any good I couldn’t tell. Sorry I just couldn’t

it kept me guessing

easy to keep up with both sides of the story tellers, I enjoy a good mystery novel, the ending felt a bit abrupt I had to rewind a couple of times to make sure I hadn't missed something but for the most part everything was explained. not a bad listen

What a turn of events

This is my second book by this author using this monotonous narrator and having an affair. Oops sorry….
Just why? You have no problems at home just because of her outer appearance? Shame! You are always going to meet beautiful women. Are you going to have an affair with them all 🤦‍♀️
The lady narrator I always love her.

The male voice ruined everything

How can that be possible that a narrator spoils it all. I liked the story though.

Cozy yet doubly creepy

I assume other readers who left reviews and commented that they didn’t like the ending because of mysteries left unsolved - they either missed the actual ending because they didn’t in fact read until the end of events or they didn’t comprehend what happened. I think the best part of this story is the ending, much like classic horror or thriller films used to end; almost like a cliffhanger or nod to the helpless audience with those within the story still very much continuing to live within their newly established reality. Clueless. The story and writing without the ending may seem banal or grating but the payoff is worth it, as if to say ‘maybe boring suburban life isn’t as boring as we all keep thinking it is,’ therefore looking back at the story - it is written well and set up without a reliance on spectacle to keep your attention. This is a slow burn like most of it’s genre, disguising itself as an almost cozy yet irksome mystery. This isn’t Gone Girl status psychological thriller, but it is her ‘English nephew’ who isn’t trying too hard just to impress you. I get the impression that this is what this author is known for, so i may just look into some other titles to make yet another rainy day that much spookier.

Okay

It was okay but not as good as his other books. The female narrator was very good but the male narrator mumbled too much and spoke too fast, especially when heard over my speakers. It was annoying, like a steady grumble.

Great story with a twist

Good story and was not expecting the twist at the end. Narrators were great as well.
