Publisher's summary
Dalton Grinder's life had unraveled in a brutal series of blows. First, the Army cast him aside. Then, his wife walked out, leaving him with nothing but the hollow echo of a once-shared life. As if that wasn't enough, his last remaining relative—his grandfather—passed away, closing the final chapter of his family history. Born and bred in the heat and humidity of Florida, Dalton now finds himself heading north to the cold, unforgiving woods of Wisconsin to settle his grandfather’s affairs.
But fate isn't done with him yet.
As Dalton arrives, the South is teetering on the edge of chaos. Legacy media dubs it an ‘insurrection,’ but the whispers on the ground speak of something far more ominous—the dawn of a new civil war. Birchwood Burning, the first book in the North of Eden series, unfolds against the backdrop of the Eden event, an apocalyptic event first introduced in Pete’s bestselling Three Days to Eden.
Dalton is about to discover that his battles are far from over.

He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Story
Nobody was prepared, including the world’s governments. The damage to humanity through loss of life was predictable, yet unfathomable. As nuclear winter spread across the globe, a rapidly cooling climate shocked humanity and many living things to their death. Nuclear Armageddon had become reality and ordinary people were paying the price. In a world without power, the exchange of information was virtually non-existent. A battle for resources was waged, pitting friend against friend and friend against foe. For the Bartlett family, their days on Swan’s Island were untenable.

Eden Army Series
Great spinoff to the Eden series. It is nice to see the contrast between each series. The Eden series main character has spent significant time preparing for what may come. In this book the main character is not a person that prepared for bad times. He is a ex military regular type of guy that is caught in the middle of a disaster that has significantly effected those in the south but has caused large disruptions in life for those north of the effected areas. I’m looking forward to the future books in this series.
