About this listen

One of the world's top experts on betrayal looks at why we often can't see it right in front of our faces.

If the cover-up is worse than the crime, blindness to betrayal can be worse than the betrayal itself. Whether the betrayer is an unfaithful spouse, an abusive authority figure, an unfair boss, or a corrupt institution, we often refuse to see the truth in order to protect ourselves. This book explores the fascinating phenomenon of how and why we ignore or deny betrayal, and what we can gain by transforming "betrayal blindness" into insight.

  • Explains the psychological phenomenon of "betrayal blindness", in which we implicitly choose unawareness in order to avoid the risk of seeing treachery or injustice
  • Based on the authors' substantial original research and clinical experience carried out over the last decade as well as their own story of confronting betrayal
  • Filled with fascinating case studies involving unfaithful spouses, abusive authority figures and corrupt institutions, to name a few

In a remarkable collaboration of science and clinical perspectives, Jennifer Freyd, one of the world's top experts on betrayal and child abuse, teams up with Pamela Birrell, a psychotherapist and educator with 25 years of experience.

Had to stop listening as the unnatural cadence and breaks mid-sentence are so bizarre. unfortunately there is no hard copy book so you have to get through this narration if you're interested in the topic. try putting the speed to about 1.3 or 1.4. at won't bother you as much. Believe me ---- no one ---- speaks --- like this. it is so ----- unnerving. also the text could use some serious editing.

the narration is beyond awful.

This book explains in a simple way what happens to people when they get betrayed by loved ones or other. Explain how deep it can be an how it’s so powerful that can blind us and others.
I liked it so much that I bought in paper to being able to highlight the parts that I found more interesting.
I wish that this book was translated in Spanish so more people could now about this.

I am getting out of an emotionally and physically abusive 10yr marriage. I also come from a childhood of various trauma...

All I can say is I have a better understanding now of how my brain works, how I have been OK with the abuse and I AM NOT STUPID for staying...

I am also learning and growing, which is amazing!!!!!!!! I am beyond grateful for the pioneers who have walked before me and struggled to learn and grow so that I can glean and grow as well!

thank you! Thank You!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

I really like the narrator and definitely enjoyed the book. We NEED to speak up about betrayal and understanding betrayal blindness is key to making sure we do this on an individual and societal level! Must read for anyone dealing with narcissistic abuse or relational trauma.

Loved it!
