About this listen

The power and reach of Mars are beyond question. The limits of that power are all too real. At the edge of their reach, even they cannot save everyone…

Faced with the terror-inspiring might of the reawakened Reezh Kazh, the Church of the Nine that once ruled hundreds of stars, the people of the Dual Republics of Chimera have asked Mars and humanity for protection.

For now, the Protectorate is united behind their Mage-Queen. Ambassador Connor O'Hannagain and Mage-Captain Roslyn Chambers are charged to do everything they can—but the reality is grim.

The Protectorate is too far away. The Chimera System cannot be saved… but the Chimeran people might be. Even as every warship Mars can spare is rushed forward to their new ally, massive fleets of transports are assembled to carry as many people to safety as possible.

The magical power of Mars can save some of Chimera's people, human and reezh alike. But if steel and magic cannot guard the innocent, Chambers, O'Hannagain, and others all face a single harsh question: When Chimera falls, who stays behind?

All I can say is I am waiting for the next book with bated breath. The forces of the Kazh have no idea what they have done.

Truly an epic continuation to the saga of the protectorate of mars.

The preparation for a powerful enemy's invasion is underway. Getting people out and having a strategy to fight the enemy at a later time is what the book is about. It is another great read.

Another Great Chapter of the Saga

Overall, it provided another glimpse into the universe of characters that you may like but no real character development or story growth. Mostly a book to connect you with the next book. Same old quirks of woman being pretty and described in greater detail and men being tall, broad, skinny and short. Bit of a let down that we didn’t progress the broader story much.

Predictable

I really enjoyed this book. I am always excited when a new novel in this series comes out. I really hope Glynn Stewart is working on the next one in the series.

Another great story in this universe

Really enjoy every moment of this series. Can’t wait for the next books to become available. The balance of fighting a battle they couldn’t win with achieving what objectives they could truly was artfully done. As we see familiar characters face difficulties with a superior foe as the time dwindles, can’t wait for the resistance and future revolution. Excellent work showing the similarities and differences across species and how their logic and decision making within social structures impact their effectiveness. Honestly, these subtleties are just as intriguing. Though this book is much more one sided than the last as far as I can tell, can’t wait to discover more of the nine.

Solid story telling and balance.

Good variety of viewpoints, but losing the enemy perspective we previously enjoyed detracted from the story.

solid progress for the series

Not sure why the author thought relegating all the heroic main characters of this mature series to bureaucratic roles behind previous secondary characters was a good idea, but that's what he did. I kept waiting for the punch line, but I guess the joke was on me because the entire book was just a series of political and proceededural interactions with a token battle here and there. Bummed.

Reads like a series of visits to the DMV
