About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Kitty Charing's life-changing inheritance comes with a catch.

Her eccentric and childless guardian, Mr. Penicuik, is leaving Kitty all of his vast fortune - but with one condition. She must marry one of his five grand-nephews. However, Kitty's clear favourite - the rakish Jack Westruther - doesn't appear at all interested in the arrangement. To make Jack jealous, Kitty impulsively convinces his cousin, the kind-hearted and chivalrous Freddy Standen, to enter into a pretend engagement.

But the more time she spends with Freddy, the more Kitty wonders whether Jack is the right choice after all....

"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austen's'." (Joanne Harris)

"Fabulously witty." (Stephen Fry)

Great narrator, funny and sweet

Funny and well-drawn characters. We know where the story is going and thoroughly enjoy the journey.

Hilarious story made even better by talented narrator

The narrator’s performance made this story so much better. His interpretation of Dolf, Jack, and Freddie was so good, especially Dolf. Each time there were parts with Dolf I was laughing out loud. The final scene with Jack’s reactions at Hugh’s place to the people in the room was hilarious. I loved this story from start to finish. For me, Heyer’s books are much more fun as audiobooks as long as the narrator is talented. Raj is very talented.

One of my favorite GH novels

I am an avid and particular Audible listener. The narration was ok but I’ve heard better. But the story which I’ve loved for years made it tolerable.

Cute Hero/Heroine. Great performance!

Freddy makes a refreshing and unexpected hero. I thought Ghatak did a great job of all the different accents/genders.

My Favorite Georgette Heyer Book

A fun, lighthearted story. The narration isn’t bad, I think the narrator took great pains to be authentic when it came to Freddy being a pink of the ton, but not always easy on the ears. This story is my all time favorite of Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances, and then The Masqueraders and The Grand Sophy. Kitty is a good heroine, but Freddy is my favorite character.

Great story; poor narration

The narrator’s voice of Kitty was especially terrible. It turned a young, naive, sweet girl into a blase jaded woman with a speaking disability.

Georgette Heyer rules!

This has got to be my favorite Heyer novel and the narrator completely nailed it. Great voices for Kitty and Freddy. Just a lot of fun!

Regency Bertie Wooster

Georgette here discovers the ancestors of Bertie and his pals at the Drones Club. A delightful look at unexpected love. The performance underplays comic possibilities (reading the text, most all the characters will seem funnier). Political correctness seriously undercuts one of the subplots: Heyer clearly meant a young earl to be mentally challenged but the narrator is content merely to give him a North Country accent. This would offend my daughter’s Yorkshire in-laws!
