About this listen

Three scientists were sent to Virginia to investigate how a human settlement has managed to coexist with primals.

Those three scientists have now gone missing. And apparently it’s Lee Harden’s job to find them, get them out, and–most importantly–retrieve their research.

But if Lee has any hope of getting past the huge population of primals in the area, he’s going to have to enlist the help of someone he thought he’d seen the last of: a human-primal hybrid named Kat.

On paper, it's a quick, in-and-out mission. And Lee, Abe, Marie, Sam, and Jones are not keen on getting involved. The whole thing stinks of intrigue, and frankly, none of them are interested in going into an unknown situation with a hybrid they don’t particularly trust.

Unfortunately, they aren’t given an option. Someone in the Interim American Government is pulling some heavy-duty strings to get them involved in this operation.

When Lee’s team–plus Kat–land in Virginia, they’re quickly swept up in a conflict where their allies might want them dead, and their enemies might be their only chance at survival.

Isolated and cut off from support, Lee and his team race against a ticking clock to uncover the truth about the scientists, what’s so important about their research, and who–if anyone–they can trust.

As the bodies stack up, and a complex web of lies and state secrets begins to unravel, Lee must decide how much the truth is worth to him.

Because it might just cost him everything.

Excellent, as always

I truly enjoyed this story. very intense and fast paced. I am always sad when a D. J. Molles story ends. Never disappointed, I just want more. I always look forward to his stories, not just this series, but all of his works! The narrator really always makes the story better. I don't see how anyone would not be entertained.

Another masterpiece, but ****ing Samir

I always thought Sam and Abby would grow up in this broken world. Get older, battle scars, lose people. They'd eventually meet back up as new people, really hit it off. Eventually get married, maybe before Lee dies, so he can see his pseudo son bring some past vestiges into the future. Maybe it would be the ending of the series and it would be a little ray of hope right around Lee's funeral. Honestly I've always loved that the characters would die, get replaced, you'd fall in love again and they'd die again; but Sam? This is the only one that got me...crushed man...crushed

This. Book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lee and team are dropped into the middle of a ticking time bomb. They fight their way in, fight their way out, lose faith in yet another leader and lose one of their own. The action never lets up, yet DJ Molles creates a quiet moment of goodbye in the middle of chaos. If you follow Lee Hardin, this is the most suspenseful and fast-paced of the series. If you don’t follow Lee Hardin, you don’t know what you’re missing.

Damn Good!

DJ Molles has written yet another ridiculously good story.

There’s enough background context given early in the story that you could listen to this as a stand alone, but it does contain some history that would spoil some of the other books a bit if you end up reading them later. You could start at the very beginning of the Remaining series, or start with The Valley for this portion of the plot line, then read the original books as a sort of prequel. Either way, you won’t regret it if you’re a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction. I’ve read and listened to many dozens of books in the genre and DJ Molles’s The Remaining books are definitely the absolute best, with the *possible* exception of The Stand by Stephen King, which I’d say comes close.

One of the most emotionally impactful books in this universe, and it hit it’s mark on every turn.

Great Story!

I have listened to all of the Lee Harden books and like all of them. This one was no different, great story arch and great character development. The addition of Kat and learning her personality through her thought processes was done very well. Easy to follow along, good action, and a storyline that kept my attention. Christian Rummel does a great job narrating the story and adds to the excitement of listening to the book. Highly recommend this book and all of the Lee Harden books.
