Publisher's summary

At the bleeding edge of space....

In the 35th century, mankind has colonized vast reaches of space, yet war remains constant as galactic governments and interstellar corporations fight for control of resource-rich planets and lucrative interstellar trade routes. And if centuries of war has taught man one thing, it's that planets are valuable and lives are cheap.

In a desperate attempt to escape his current life, Mark Rizer drops out of his prestigious university and enlists in the elite Marines of the United Systems Alliance defense forces. It's a decision that will take him across the galaxy, first to endure a sadistic boot camp designed to transform him into a ruthless killing machine, and then to join the ranks of the hardened Marines of Murder Company.

Deployed to Verdant, a remote jungle moon at the edge of Alliance space, Mark finds himself fighting a ghostly enemy in an unending conflict where victories are measured in body counts and death is the only ticket home. The daily grind of combat patrols transforms good men into cold-blooded killers and weak ones into bitter memories. At the bleeding edge of space, Mark learns the true cost of war as he fights for his life, his platoon mates, and his humanity.

In the 35th century, war has evolved.

Man hasn't.

love this series.

Asleep is by far the best military scifi author, you can tell he was able to add his experience and back grou d to make this series amazing. As a veteran this series hits some emotions that books written by civilians have yet to. The fear feels real, the loss heavy. 5 stars all day.

I loved this book!

I had never heard of this author, but thankfully sometimes audible gets it right for recommendations.
Of course the narrator nailed it. All in all, highly recommended and now I’m off to book 2 and hoping more books are on the way.

One of the best stories of the way military works and the way the writers hit the nail on the head from an army man well done, well done

Looking forward to seeing where this goes

It was a tad hard to keep up / get invested with the various perspectives.

Riser of course was well fleshed out and the only one I really felt invested in.

the other characters were interesting but would have liked to spend more time with them.

for the audio book would have been nice to have the narrator identify each perspective before beginning reading.

No one is safe in the book which is fair. It is war after all. don't want to spoil anything, But at a certain point it becomes well... who isn't going to die if you know what I mean...

looking forward to the next book. worth the credit for me. and has me hunting for more like it.

came to this book off listening to Armor.

the narrator is awesome on this and on Armor same guy. (He has several different voices and tonalities, also does a good job with a variety of accents giving the characters flavor.)

for any of my 1.5x and 2x listeners, I found the narrator's cadence fit best in the 1.3-1.5 range. faster it would become hard to clearly follow for me due to the various accents and tonalities he employs.

Light Read, but fun

Predictable and a little awkward around the female characters, but scratches that young masculine fantasy itch!
