About this listen

Juggling a family and a career is never easy - and it's becoming a real challenge for Sheriff Joanna Brady. Coping with the impending delivery of her second child as well as a staff shortage, the last thing Joanna needs is two serious crimes.

First, the body of an unidentified man is found in the desert, all of his fingers savagely severed. Following the scant clues, Joanna learns that the victim was an ex-con who had served 20 years in prison after confessing to the murder of his pregnant wife. During his last days he was seen following and photographing a young woman.

Then one of Joanna's officers is brutally attacked while on an unauthorized stakeout. Because the officer is one of its own, the department throws its resources into finding her attacker. But the murder haunts Joanna. Being a sheriff has become what she is, and she'll risk everything to see that justice is done.

the reader should listen to the other books to make sure the names are properly pronounced. old school English is always best. it`s "Laythrrope" not "Latthtope", "Hymie" not "Jamie" and "Herfords", not "Heffords".

pronunciation is everything

One of the better Brady novels. Included a good mystery, more growth in the family, etc. Some mispronunciations with the new narrator. But, she’s better than the last.

Don’t pass by the ranch. Stop and read this one. If you have made it this far in the series, you shouldn’t stop now. I actually think this is one of Brady’s best outings. I hope the series continues for awhile more.

Narrator used accents for Spanish surnamed characters who are US citizens and didn't pronounce saguaro correctly. that put me off.
The story is unique and very unpredictable. I very much enjoyed the action scenes and the working ethic of a pregnant sheriff!!

Gripping mystery that keeps you reading

Another great book by J A Jance. The reader is very good, but some name mispronunciations kept her from being excellent. The funniest mistake she made was when she said that Ernie “reupholstered” his gun. Definitely not what Jance had in mind, but worth a belly laugh.

Reader very good, with some exceptions

There were several pronunciation errors throughout this narrative. An example was Joanna’s father’s last name “Lathrop”. It was pronounced with a hard “a” sound, a soft “a” sound, and with an “n” “Lanthrop”. This time around the word Pasty was pronounced properly. This sounds picky, but when it is a word repeated frequently throughout the narrative it becomes annoying.

Good book but the reader tried to attach accents and attitudes in a ‘hammy’ way.

Not impressed with the reader

J.A. Jance does not disappoint in her delivery of an engaging story that keeps the reader coming back for more. The dialogue between the characters seems authentic. I really enjoyed the narrator’s ability to deliver an accurate Latino accent in the parts of the story where appropriate.

Gripping Story Line

Suspenseful storyline, enjoyed the characters but I was disappointed in the narration. Sometimes hard to distinguish between characters talking during back and forth dialogue. Exciting story though and wondering if Sheriff Brady would have the baby in the middle of a crime scene kept me listening. I have heard this narrator many times before since I have listened to many many of the " in death " series by JD Robb so that might have been my problem not this narrator's fault.

Strong heroine
