About this listen

Monsters. Girls. Mayhem.

The Darkness has taken Malem. The Breaker fights for Vorgon now.

But that doesn’t mean Malem is going to let anyone harm the five women he’s bound to. They give him the power to control monsters, after all. Besides, they’re super hot.

Vorgon doesn’t like the devotion Malem shows his women, so the evil demon decides to send him on a fool’s errand - his mission is to infiltrate the kingdom of the Tree Elves and Break their queen. No easy task, given that she is surrounded by an army of bloodthirsty fighters and merciless mages, not to mention a crapload of monsters.

This errand might just backfire on Vorgon, however, because if Malem succeeds, he will grow in power far beyond anything the demon ever dreamed of....

Brilliant, I read & listened to this one at the same time, straight through over a few days at home

Malem is Broken by the Balor, Vorgon, in this book, and he struggles against his will and the forces of evil. Malem running a progress from the Breaker to becoming the Defiler is reminiscent me of Warcraft III, in which the Paladin becomes a Death Knight. Definitely some twists and conflicts as Malem deals with being forced to be something, which he is not by nature. I read this one straight through over a few days at home!

Defiler

Only issue was dealing with initial two hours as it was hard to see main character act the way he did.

Interesting but

This is for Monster breaker books 1-3
First off I love this series! It’s got interesting well thought out mechanics, especially the monster breaking mechanics, you can tell the author has put a lot of thought and care into this series. Only complaint for the writing is a fight can go on for around an hour or so and makes me start to tune out a little sometimes.
Narration is decent but near book 3 he starts running out of voices and reuses some of them (especially annoying when it’s a voice he uses for a main female character and uses it for a new male character of a different race)

Hard Read Even if You Enjoy the Series

As others have noted, this book is a hard read/listen if you are invested in the series. I get the whole mind control thing, but damn it is hard to listen to the MC being such a d_ck. I found myself needing to take breaks of a day or two between listening sessions before I was ready to continue listening to what is essentially "adventures of arsehole." I think I need to pause for a while before continuing the series as well. Already have them in my library but just need a break from the series after this book. If you are like me and enjoy being emotionally invested in a story's MC, you may want to skip this one, reading a short summary and continuing the series in the next book.

LD is a really good narrator and performs with his usual quality. No complaints there.

It's ok

The voice actor works hard and has a nice range of character voices - but this book would have worked much, much better with a second voice actor for the female voices.

A nice twist to have the hero brainwashed into serving the evil overlord and committing evil acts, although he seemed to get away with an awful lot of defiance and disobedience.

It was just ok, not particularly engrossing. At the end I felt a bit of relief and was grateful this was a trilogy instead of an incredibly long series. Just about everything seemed to be neatly wrapped up. I was surprised to see this is a five book series. I don't intend to continue listening to the rest of the series.

Borderline

The end of the second book enticed me to buy the third. The contents of this one are a bit interesting, but not enough to buy full price. The sexual jokes and mannerisms are a bit much within the environment alotted. Cringy. Try different comic relief. The mental mannerisms and struggle seemed well done overall. Nicely paced character development throughout series. Still a bit of a struggle to listen to, but not because of the mind controlled actions. Well narrated.

Hard Listening

It is hard to get through an entire book when the main character has become so despicable. I finished the book because I have hopes that the next book in the series will go back to being as good as the first two. The narration is struggling to deal with the multitude of characters. And is not making sense in the choice of accents.
