Born to the sea but called to the skies, can Lila embrace her true destiny as a Dragon Rider before it's too late?
In the storm-swept Western Archipelago where Sea Dragons rule the skies, Lila is destined to inherit her father's plundering ships. But Lila envisions a new path: transforming the Raiders into Dragon Riders who defend the seas instead of ravaging them.
When Danu, a young monk on a mysterious quest, arrives with a prophecy, he reveals that Lila is the lost heir of the Sea Crown—a born Dragon Rider. Guided by Danu, she seeks out her destined dragon, an untamed creature as stubborn as she. Together, they must learn to trust each other.
As darkness looms over the archipelago and old enemies stir, Lila realizes that more than her people's future is at stake. With the fate of the realm hanging in the balance, she must unite warring factions and embrace her true heritage.
Can Lila forge a new destiny without losing sight of where she came from? Or will the tides of change wash away all she holds dear?

Wonderful start to a series

I like how Lila is confident and strong willed, yet not everything comes easy. The interplay between her and Danu is entertaining. Each have their own strengths that somewhat clash with each other. The dragon has a great personality too.
This is the second book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Jean Ann Douglas ) and she did a wonderful job bringing the story to life, and instilling the personalities of the characters. Her diction and cadence was great, and expression of the story was well done.
Her screech of the dragons did not coincide with the description, but that was the only mildly uncomfortable. There is not much differentiation between Lila or Danu’s voice, so I found myself often having to replay or switch the picture in my mind to visualize the correct character. This is exacerbated by each chapter switching between Lila and Danu’s perspective. The chapter starts off telling us whose perspective we are listening to, but I found I had to purposely focus on this to avoid having an issue with recognizing who was speaking. This made listening less immersive and seamless.
There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

Fun characters

Lila is a girl on the cusp of being a woman when she finds out that her past redefines her future. Through bravery she fights to find a way to save her people.
My favorite character from this book was the mage's apprentice. If not for his faith, courage, and kindness Lila may have never found out who she truly was.
Jean Ann Douglas does a tremendous job narrating the story. Her voice and storytelling ability fit perfectly with the written word.
I had a lot of fun listening to this story.

Good book

This was, for the most part, a pretty good start of a new fantasy series. It is a bit slow at first, and I struggled for the first couple hours to stay engaged. I stuck with it, though, and was glad I did. By the end of the book, I was fully engaged and wanting the story to continue. The narration was done well and is what kept me going those first couple hours.
slow at first but worth sticking with it

The main thing I fault this audiobook for is the narrators editing abilities. There are some words that have obviously been sliced in to correct something and the cut has a completely different tone and pitch witch catches you off guard. If you can look past the fact that this was likely made by a newer narrator, then this is definitely worth a listen.
