About this listen
The best-selling novel featuring the "wonderfully epic hero" (People) who inspired the hit film Jack Reacher.
Thumbing across the scorched West Texas desert, loner Jack Reacher has nowhere to go and all the time in the world to get there. Cruising the same stretch of two-lane blacktop is pretty Carmen Greer. But for Reacher, the lift comes with a hitch. Carmen's got a story to tell, and it's a wild one. All about her husband, her family secrets, and a hometown that's pure Gothic. She's also got a plan. Jack Reacher's part of it. And before the sun sets, this ride could cost them both their lives.

Story
Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Story
Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

Story
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Featured Article: The top 100 series of all time
The feeling of discovering that your favorite new listen is actually the start of a series is euphoric. That you can immediately hit play and re-enter a beloved new world, or love story, or era from history is a gift to the devoted listener. But how to pick just 100 of these unique and immersive listening journeys? We defined a series as having a minimum of three books, and—after some debate—we decided the titles had to be anchored in fiction. From YA to horror to historical fiction, from fresh voices to seminal tales, hours of discovery await.

Even his wife has left him for a flashy homicide detective. Story
It is a world like our own in every respect, save one. In the 1950s, random acts of possession begin to occur. Ordinary men, women, and children are the targets of entities that seem to spring from the depths of the collective unconscious, pop-cultural avatars some call demons. As a boy, Del Pierce is possessed by the Hellion, an entity whose mischief-making can be deadly. With the help of Del's family and a caring psychiatrist, the demon is exorcised... or is it?

You probably haven't noticed them. But they've noticed you. They notice everything. That's their job. Sitting quietly in a nondescript car outside a bank making note of the tellers' work habits. Lagging a few car lengths behind the Brinks truck on its daily rounds. Surreptitiously jiggling the handle of an unmarked service door at the racetrack. They're heisters.

For the past twenty years, Lee Child has been one of the bestselling authors in the world, thanks to the popularity of his iconic and instantly recognizable hero Jack Reacher. But even at the height of Reacher's fame, Child's short story writing was not confined to the series; throughout the course of his career, he published tales about a range of characters on both sides of the law, including assassins, a body guard, CIA and FBI agents, gangsters, and more.

From the Stone Age to the Greek Tragedies, from Shakespeare to Robin Hood, we have always had our heroes. The hero is at the centre of formative myths in every culture and persists to this day in world-conquering books, films and TV shows. But why do these characters continue to inspire us, and why are they so central to storytelling? Scalpel-sharp on the roots of storytelling and enlightening on the history and science of myth, The Hero is essential listening for anyone trying to write or understand fiction.

Love the series but,
This narrator is AWFUL!! He is fine for Reacher, but he makes the female characters sound like strung out drug addicts! Sorry, I just wonder why he was chosen to narrated these books! Johnathan MeClain is so much better

Reacher doing too much Sherlock Holmes stuff
The best Reacher stories have interesting and likable characters and straightforward plot without too much Jack doing the "I'll think like the bad guy and find them in motel X" stuff and "I'll guess the bad guy with random clues and act like I haven't guessed yet". In this book the bad guy is obvious for the reader somewhere two thirds of the book and the main characters are not people whose faith really interests you. So not one of the best Reacher novels.

Very Disappointed
If this had been the first Jack Reacher book I had listened to, I would not have bought any others. "This is Texas" explained all the negative behavior, and all the Northeasterner's negative stereotypical beliefs about Texans were there. As for the narrator, his "female" voices were weak and pensive, and if he's ever been to Texas, you couldn't prove it by his accent. Sounded more like Philadelphia with a bit of Michigan kicked in!

I am an avid Lee Child fan. I appreciate the suspense without horror and gore. Jack reacher is my favorite character. Dick Hill as the narrator is always on point. I enjoyed the story and as simple as this may seem, I can never guess the ending. I am always awaiting the next Reacher adventure.

Good, not super.
I'm working through the Reacher series and this one was OK. I liked most of it and will continue the series. Reacher was super human as usual. The little girl didn't seem to fit well and seemed out of context sometimes - too knowledgeable for her age at times, not mature enough at others. I also didn't like the way the narrator read the little girl's lines, so that may be impacting my impression. If your a Jack Reacher fan, this is worth listening to. If you haven't listened to any Reacher books yet, start at the beginning of the series!
