About this listen

When the woman you never got over shows up asking you to play her girlfriend for the holidays, that sounds like fun in an awkward, don't die-now-heart, kind of way. A lesbian romantic comedy with a side of fake relationships, small towns, and holiday love.

In college, Elizabeth Smile shared a magical tryst with her roommate, Michelle Harlow. She had no idea the night would leave Elizabeth pining after her for the next ten years. Now Michelle is back with a strange offer: Will she pretend to be Michelle's lesbian lover to beat Michelle's cheating husband?

Of course, it's a terrible idea. And it would mean leaving the New York nightlife behind and spending Christmas with Michelle's family in Ohio—an overly accepting father, a pill-popping brother, and a suspicious sister who seems to have her own agenda with Elizabeth.

Worst of all, it'll mean facing up to some old feelings she'd rather not revisit. But, really, she can handle all that. How hard can it be?

This twisty holiday romance is about getting more than we bargain for.

Contains mature themes.

I stuck with it…

The first 3/4 of the book is filled with boring dialogue. The last 1/4 of the book was mediocre at best. It will go in the not to be listened to again collection.

Final Curtain

Elizabeth had a one night twist with her roommate Michelle in college. It had heft her pining ever since. Now Michelle is back asking for a fake relationship over The holidays. Took me some time to get into the book. Michelle is a totally unlikable character for me. Elizabeth seems a shallow character at first but then the action with sister of Michelle gets interesting. A study in dysfunctional relationships.

Well, I found it refreshing!

After reading some of the reviews, I wasn’t expecting much. I think I bought this at a discount to give it a shot. The author is hit and miss for me, and this was definitely “hit”!
It held my interest throughout, and I truly wasn’t sure what was going to happen. All the characters were very interesting in a quirky way. I, for one, am very pleased that this wasn’t a been there, done that storyline. I was entertained, laughed, and happy with how the events played out. Another reviewer called it “brilliant” and I have to kind of agree!

Give it a chance—brilliant!

I almost stopped listening twice at the beginning, but let Watley (one of the greats) keep me onboard. Thank goodness! Anyone who loves Jodie Foster’s heart warmingly funny, real, and flawed Home for the Holidays will relish this story. The characters are people you know and the antics are over the top funny with dark undertones. This is NOT a Hallmark romance, although it provides one hell of an HEA. Listen to it. It will be my holiday go to book evermore.

I have read better than this one

If not the narration of Anastasia Watley, I would have stoped listening after the 3rd chapter. The story was boring until chapter 9 or 10.

Storyline…

It was unfortunate that the storyline concept didn’t keep the pretend relationship turning real. Too much extra drama for me.

Hard to explain

There were things in the story I didn’t like. Others things I did. Love the narrator. I just didn’t care for the story overall.

Spoiler Alert

This book triggered me in a way no romance novel ever has. I found the “Black Santa Lynching” scene to be unnecessary and extremely offensive. Any one who found it witty or amusing as some reviewer have noted is as sick as the writer. I couldn’t finish this after that scene. It was a hard to follow up to that point regardless. The narrative only did a change of voice when having to put a blackcent or Irish accent everyone else sounded the same so it was hard to follow conversations. Honestly the two characters the book opened with were more interesting than any of other characters especially the MC.
