thoroughly enjoyed, thanks Jocko.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It's a little on the short side and I just downloaded it because I like the author, but it was well worth the time. Great book, Jocko, thank you.

Storytelling like some sort of unorthodox poetry

You know how when you watch a great movie and you describe it as “very un-Hollywood”? This book is like that to me. I really enjoyed the story, the way it unfolds and the unique details. The way he “leaves out” some of the descriptive sentences that would regularly be included is almost like missing lines of text. But those descriptions are not necessary, the picture is still vivid in your mind because it is what you already know. You know characters like this in your own life. There is an economy of words. It’s kind of like poetry, and I do not appreciate poetry. I don’t get poetry. I get this book and I get this story. It doesn’t use shocking language, it is just human and gritty and real. It’s a story, it’s different and I found I really liked it.

Short and poignant

From the very first line, it’s clear that this story is not going to be a HEA, but I kept hoping that there might be a chance for redemption. The characters are so likable and well written that I wanted that HEA. *spoiler* no HEA, but a satisfying and poignant conclusion.

Wow. Need to Read.

Simple. Thought-provoking. Outstanding. What a great “Spin” on an incredible life lesson. We all know these characters and if you don’t, at some point in your life you will.

Highly recommend

This is Jocko's first adult novel. It's a big contrast to his multiple leadership & children's books. This is a love story; a story of love, sacrifice, and loyalty. It's written in a very minimalistic style. Very little description - you KNOW these characters, or people like them... In length, it's more of a novella - a long short story or a short novel. The audiobook is 4 hr, but the last hour is a fascinating conversation between Jocko & one of his business partners, Dave Berke, about his writing process. I went with the audio version because I hear Jocko's voice in my head when I read his books anyway. I've listened to it twice in less than 2 weeks.
Parts are laugh out loud funny. Parts are heartbreaking. Parts made me want to yell at the characters. It's real life.... I love this book and highly recommend it UNLESS the use of profanity would offend/bother you.
