About this listen

Two-time Christy Award winner Lynn Austin is hailed for her inspiring historical novels. As in Candle in the Darkness Austin transports us back to the turbulence of the Civil War.

Julia, a wealthy Philadelphia socialite is forced to overcome great obstacles and look for deeper meaning in her life when her intended describes her as shallow. Despite social restrictions on single women, she pursues a vocation as a battlefield nurse. Julia finds a kindred spirit in Phoebe, a West Virginia farm girl who dresses in men's clothing in order to be a soldier. Strength of character, determination, and faith foster their transformation into womanhood.

Winner of Library Journal's Best Christian Fiction Award for 2003, this novel portrays wholesome values. Christina Moore gives a warm narration of this well-crafted story.

Fire by Night

Amazing, Captivating and a must listen! This is the second book in a trilogy that takes place during the civil war. Lynn Austin is by far my favorite author and is a genius with her ability to write Christian, historical fiction. This story is about two women from different backgrounds who go to on to experience the insanity of war. One as a nurse and one as a soldier (dressed as a man). I felt compelled to listen. Very entertaining and educational. Candle in the Darkness is the first book in the trilogy , but the stories are independent enough that you could start with book two. My favorite Lynn Austin book is still Wonderland Creek but I think this would be a close second. Jennifer

Amazing story with passionate narration

I enjoyed every part of this book; it clearly portrays the love of our Heavenly Father passionately displayed in the day to day lives of families caught in the battle of the Civil War, family expectations and norms.

Loved this book!

Historical fiction at its finest. The characters were interesting with new developments along the way. The end was predictable but ended in a good way. One of the best selections I have read.

Didn't want it to end

The first book I cried because it finished. I want to keep hearing about their lives. I came to love all the characters so much, I'm sad they won't be in my life... at least, until I listen again.
