About this listen

Grace Repton, a beautiful older woman, walks into the police station to tell Detective Matt Ballard she has information that could stop a murder. Her fiance, the infamous serial killer Jeremy Reader, has told her that he has a disciple who is going to kill using Reader's horrific methods.

Reader murdered five women and was finally brought to justice by Detective Ballard. Reader is safely imprisoned in a high security prison, and claiming to be a reformed man who wants to help the police.

But can Matt believe the serial killer or his peculiar wife to be? Can the love of a good woman really change a serial killer?

And the Fenland police also have another investigation on their hands. A Lithuanian migrant worker is found dead on the fens. There is no ID on him, but he has a Tree of Life tattoo. This is the third body to be found with this distinctive tattoo. Is this gang war or something even more sinister?

The police are stretched to the breaking point with multiple copycat murders. And Matt and his girlfriend Liz will fight for everything they care about in a heart-stopping conclusion that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Good story - terrible narration

The characters in this book are from previous storylines but because of the narration i couldn’t recognize them until well into the story. Very disappointing.

Good series continues

Enjoyable second book in the series. I was entertained by the story as well as surprised. There was no early prediction for me as to the outcome. It was another good one by Joy Ellis.

Great addition to the Ellis collection

This is another great story from the Joy Ellis collection. I am addicted to her stories. This is no different. This was captivating and even ended with the plot twist like I expected.

Compelling plot twists!

Great range of accents and voices to distinguish among the various characters. Intriguing plot twists. I love the Fenland mysteries.

Not sure I care what happens next

The case was good but the story was too slow for my taste. I liked the people even if I don't think they are good detectives and I don't know if I want to continue. I'll add the book to my wishlist and wait until it's on sale

Not the Best

Normally I quite like these stories but this disappointed me. Gruesome and rather unsurprising end.

Twists and turns

Like the story line and further main character development. I frequently struggle to understand a narrator’s accent.

Back to Mysteries

I love these police procedurals. The more bodies the better. So entertaining. Great page turners.

Better than the first book but…….

I have always enjoyed Ms Ellis’ books but this series is just disappointing. While this book is definitely better than the first Matt Ballard, which was a complete disaster, there just isn’t enough to this series to hold my attention. I’m moving on.

Exciting, suspenseful and totally a book that you couldn’t put down

A story that is so unbelievable. Matt has to trust his instincts, but at every turn he’s left unsure. Nothing seems as it is. A great story that will keep you listening to the very end
