About this listen

Darlene Montgomery has been to hell and back...more than once. After a stint in jail for drug possession, she is finally clean and ready to start over. Yet another failed relationship is just the motivation she needs to move from New York to San Francisco with the hopes of resurrecting her dance career and discovering that she is more than the sum of her rap sheet. As Darlene struggles in her new city, the last thing she wants is to become entangled with her handsome - but cranky - neighbor and his adorable little girl....

Sawyer Haas is weeks away from finishing law school, but exhaustion, dwindling finances, and the pressure to provide for himself and his daughter, Olivia, are wearing him down. A federal clerkship - a job he desperately needs - awaits him after graduation, but only if he passes the bar exam. Sawyer doesn't have the time or patience for the capricious - if beautiful - dancer who moves into the apartment above his. But Darlene's easy laugh and cheerful spirit seep into the cracks of his hardened heart, and slowly break down the walls he's resurrected to keep from being betrayed ever again.

When the parents of Olivia's absentee mother come to fight for custody, Sawyer could lose everything. To have any chance at happiness, he must trust Darlene, the woman who has somehow found her way past his brittle barbs, and Darlene must decide how much of her own bruised heart she is willing to give to Sawyer and Olivia, especially when the ghosts of her troubled past refuse to stay buried.

Contains mature themes.

5 beautiful stars for Sawlene.

This book is one of my favorite books by this author. The story is so well written, I feel everything the narrators read down to my bones. I can’t help but love all the characters, my heart breaks for these two people looking for a better life for themselves and finding a beautiful love along the ay. Great story, great characters, great plot. Very worth the time.

Sweet, swoony, angsty, and impossible to forget

Darlene: new to San Francisco, Dancer, Massage Therapist, attends NA
Sawyer: single dad, law student, studying for the Bar exam
Olivia: Sawyer’s daughter, the most precious little baby girl
Sawyer is stand-offish at first but Darlene’s charisma wears him down and they become friends. And eventually more.
These two are literally fighting their own internal battles. Sawyer struggles with “absolutes” in his worldview. He is rigid in his beliefs that there is right/wrong especially within the law and no gray areas. Darlene challenges his worldview as well as other circumstances including his daughter that I do not want to spoil. Darlene struggles with her addiction as well as her identity. "I will always be an addict even if you put the word 'recovering' in front of it. I will always have to work ten times as hard to be trusted, to be trustworthy but that's the price I have to pay for my mistakes"
"You deserve to be loved as you are, Darlene. Not in bits and pieces"

I absolutely loved this!!!! I had to travel for work, so I listened while driving, and nearly had to pull over because at one point I was crying while listening. The narrators do such a great job bringing the characters to life with different voices. I absolutely adore Sawyer, he is such a cinnamon roll. He is sooooo sweet and loving to his daughter Olivia. Seeing Darlene grow, and learn to trust and love herself again was beautiful. Highly recommend.

All the feels and all the stars!

Oh my gosh! I am kicking myself for waiting this long to read an Emma Scott book! This was just wonderful! Sawyer, Darlene, and little Olivia just broke my heart and then put it back together piece by piece. The narration was great. I will definitely be reading more from Ms. Scott!

very enjoyable

I love this story. I own the paperback but thought I would give the audio version a chance and I'm glad I did. They picked the perfect narrators in my opinion.

Omg my heart...and ovaries!!!

A softouching story full of hope in the face of misery. It twisted my insides and yet filled my heart with so many emotions, my eyes teared up throughout.
The heroine Darlene is so strong, Omg how does she do it!
I was in awe of her vivacious, sunny positivity all the while fighting her own shadow that followed her everywhere!!

“I will always be an addict even if you put the word ‘recovering’ in front of it. I will always have to work ten times as hard to be trusted, to be trustworthy but that’s the price I have to pay for my mistakes.”

And the stoic Sawyer The Lawyer completely had me spellbound. His appearance itself made my ovaries explode everytime Darlene said -Daddeee and he kissed her...Omg 🥰🥰🥰
His own black & white view of the world expands with every chapter, encompassing all the beautiful human colors.

“You deserve to be loved as you are, Darlene. Not in bits and pieces.”

It was refreshing, novel and sweet, exactly what Emma is herself.
THE BEST part was the narrator Caitlin Kelly. Omg what a powerhouse of talent this lady is. Her voice texture, modulation, emotionally Laden tone just took the book to whole another level. She's gained one more fan.

Beautiful

This book redeemed my faith in audible sales.
I must say I bought a lot of books on sale and have been listening to them and have regretted buying them... until I listened to this gem.
I was postponing listening to this one because I thought it was going to be too heavy for my current mood, but I have to say, that even though it does have heavy topics and events, I absolutely loved it. It was a lesson and beautiful and loving and I really really loved it, and would recommend it to anyone, for me it would be worth a credit.
I also liked the narration.

Just beautiful

I loved everything about this. The narration by Greg Tremblay and Caitlin Kelly was top notch. Their voices carried the emotional build-up in this story to a fever pitch.

The romance itself was well executed with an unexpected twist or two that kept me hopping with stress for the protagonists. I loved how the author brought this couple together as sort-of enemies to lovers, and built up the emotion and tension rather than sex (but sex is there too). I was on tenterhooks over the risk of loss of a child and the fledgeling relationship. So well done. These were good, nice people I loved and wanted to be happy and together. The bond they formed and the family they created was totally heart-warming.

Thanks Emma Scott for a wonderful romance experience. It was my first Emma Scott romance, but I'll be reading more.

Highly recommended.
