Publisher's summary

A world fallen under a plague of seven billion walking dead. A tiny island nation the last refuge of the living. One team of the world's most elite special operators. The dead, these heroes, humanity's last hope, all have...Arisen.

When the Zombie Apocalypse came, one country had shut down its borders in response to a major terrorist attack. Now Fortress Britain is the last bastion of the living with 50 million beleaguered survivors facing down a world of 7 billion animated corpses. And when civilization fell, one international team of supremely elite special operators was being assembled for a nearly impossible mission, deployed out of the SAS barracks at Hereford. Supremely trained and armed, always the most skilled, resolved, and unstoppable amongst us, now the commandos of Alpha team are humanity's last best hope for survival. Searching through the detritus of fallen Europe, scavenging pharmaceutical labs for clues to a vaccine that might bring humanity back from the brink, now they are tasked with one last desperate operation. They must cross the Atlantic aboard the world's only remaining supercarrier, insert by air into the very middle of a dead continent, and then fight their way on foot through a city of 3 million ravening dead guys. But these Zulus will not be like any zombies they have ever fought before....

Extremely well written!

One of the best zombie series I've read. The authors do a great job with description and keeping the action amped up. I loved it!

A decent zombie series

I've actually listened to this series up to Book 6 so I think I can speak on this one with some authority.

Book 1 (Fortress Britain) is a decent opener to a very expansive and long-running zombie apocalypse franchise. It's short and the first couple books in the franchise are also short so be prepared for that if you intend to dive into it. The later books get longer.

The world building in this is excellent and the plot is very realistic (I'm talking World War Z the movie level here). The author does a great job at establishing the setting and everything just "feels right". If you're into action and military stories at all, you'll probably find this one enjoyable.

Having said that, there are still some things left to be desired. There are a LOT of characters and the story is constantly jumping around between different plot lines happening all at once. It's not so bad in the first book but it gets worse as the series progresses almost to the point of being annoying. My other main gripe is that the characters are pretty much all one dimensional. All of them, all the time. Not too surprising in a military fiction novel but it also makes it hard to care when some of the characters "buy the farm" (if you know what I mean) or just have "issues" in general.

All in all I enjoyed it. I'd recommend picking this one up if it's "free" with your subscription (I think the first 2 or 3 books are) and see if you like it enough to spend actual money on the rest.

WARNING - Series is opioid-level military sciFi

And I HATE all things zombie.

The plot, though containing elements of the familiar, retains enough creativity, action, and thrill to keep you glued to your listening devices. There will be cliff hangers within the different arc's of the story, but nothing that makes you angry, you just want to get the next-in-series as soon as you possibly can. Other authors take note, I challenge you to do the same. The characters are unique and well developed. I found it easy to identify with multiple characters which in turn pushes the envelope of engaging the listener.

I am not a horror fan. I think the zombie genre has been over-worked and denotes a lack of creativity on the part of writers who can't think of any other type of antagonist. You see this in TV, movies, books on tape and video games. Fortunately, the way the story develops, I caught myself asking "Wait ... is this really happening ... is THIS really happening !!". The foreshadowing is masterful.

And ...

R.C. Bray

Fantastic

This is the best ZA series I have read/listened to and I have been immersing myself in the genre for close to 12 years. Lee Harden was my previous favorite series. The writing is top notch and of course narrator RC Bray is his usual perfect self. Don’t miss this series if you are a true fan of the genre.

Great Military Zombie Story

Good story and narration. I've listened to a lot of zombie books and this one ranks right up there with the best - I really like the military point of view as well. The only problem I have is that the books are really short. However, I can't wait for the 3rd book to drop on the 19th.
