About this listen

New York Times best seller.

They all thought he was gone. But he was alive and trapped inside his own body for ten years.

In January 1988 Martin Pistorius, aged 12, fell inexplicably sick. First, he lost his voice and stopped eating. Then he slept constantly and shunned human contact. Doctors were mystified. Within 18 months, he was mute and wheelchair-bound. Martin's parents were told an unknown degenerative disease left him with the mind of a baby and less than two years to live.

Martin was moved to care centers for severely disabled children. The stress and heartache shook his parents’ marriage and their family to the core. Their boy was gone. Or so they thought.

Ghost Boy is the heart-wrenching story of one boy’s return to life through the power of love and faith. In this audiobook, listeners will learn of:

  • A parent’s resilience
  • The consequences of misdiagnosis
  • Abuse at the hands of cruel caretakers
  • The unthinkable duration of Martin’s mental alertness betrayed by his lifeless body

We also see a life reclaimed — a business created, a new love kindled — all from a wheelchair.

Martin's emergence from his own darkness invites us to celebrate our own lives and fight for a better life for others.

powerful and resilient

I loved the book, and Martin's story resonated deeply since I have a family member with physical, but not mental handicaps. I related to his mother and his father, because you do grieve for the healthy child and for the obstacles they may face. I found his love story particularly inspiring. Great read!

Not enough stars

This book is a must read. To say that book is inspirational is cliche. The story of a man whose is brought back to life is moving. For me it demonstrates the power of God and the human spirit. Then, to listen to him become independent and fall in love eliminates the possibility of conquering anything. God bless you, Martin.

The life story of this man made me appreciate the blessings I have in my own life and that struggles are just temporary roadblocks. His attitude is inspiring. He suffered so much hardship & overcame it with such grace it brought tears to my eyes!

Awe Inspiring

An amazing man with an awe inspiring story. The fact that he survived is incredible. The fact that he's been able to write his autobiography is proof of his unrelenting drive for life.

I love that he was willing to share his story. It is so personal and intimate. So proud of him for all of his accomplishments and for overcoming the odds! A beautiful book from a beautiful soul.

its ok

I liked it but it wasn't my kind of narrator. Its almost too dry for the subject matter.
