About this listen

Girl, Alone (An Ella Dark FBI Suspense Thriller, Book 1) is the debut novel in a long-anticipated new series by number one best seller and USA Today best-selling author Blake Pierce, whose best seller Once Gone has received over 1,000 five star reviews.

FBI Agent Ella Dark, 29, is given her big chance to achieve her life’s dream: to join the Behavioral Crimes Unit. Ella has a hidden obsession: She has studied serial killers from the time she could read, devastated by the murder of her own sister. With her photographic memory, she has obtained an encyclopedic knowledge of every serial killer, every victim, and every case. Singled out for her brilliant mind, Ella is invited to join the big leagues.

But when a killer strikes in the swamps of Louisiana, Ella soon comes to learn that the real thing is nothing she could expect. Face to face with a real murder, a real killer, and a real ticking clock, Ella realizes she can’t rely on her knowledge. She must learn to trust her instinct, and allow herself to enter the dark canals of a real killer’s mind. If she gets it wrong, her career is at stake.

And so is the next victim’s life.

Will Ella’s talent be an asset? Or the source of her downfall?

A harrowing crime thriller featuring a brilliant and tortured FBI agent, the Ella Dark series is a riveting mystery, packed with suspense, twists, and turns, revelations, and driven by a breakneck pace that will keep you listening late into the night.

Books two and three in the series — Girl, Taken and Girl, Hunted — are also available.

The rookie and the serial killer

FBI analyst, Ella Dark has just been given the opportunity of a lifetime…accompany a veteran BAU agent to investigate a possible serial murder. Ella soon deduces that they are after a copycat serial killer. Good story, albeit a bit slow.

Good story!

Great story I enjoyed it very much. My only issue is the reader lacked emotion and her tone didn't match the story.

Good story/Narration Lacking

great story, narration was lacking. parts where there's tense moments or screaming the narrator maintains a quiet and flat tone of voice which doesn't build the moments up as well as they could've been.

Great story!

This book was one of my first on the category for thrillers. I enjoyed it but seemed a little dragged out. I’m not sure if I will listen to the other ones that follow.

Hasn’t this been done already?

The narration was pretty good, but the storyline was lacking. Seemed like I had heard all this before. Dialogue is weak in many places. Didn’t meet its potential.

Oh...the breathing!!

This book is slow to start. Then I realized I needed to speed it up just a notch to try and enjoy the story. The book is decent and the personalities of the two female FBI agents was painful to listen to as they were being described and how their characters played out. So, male like to follow the typical pattern for an experienced female law enforcement officer.
The narrator was good at her voices but her breathing made me want a refund at about chapter 10. She either needs better recording equipment or an asthma inhaler. All I could think throughout listening was please get a breathing treatment & try this again. I have listened to over a thousand books and never once even from the absolute most treacherous narrators have I heard this breathing. It is not breathy or renders her performance differently it's literally her breathing as she reads.
I cannot say if the series will be good or not b/c of the things that I asserted bothered me. I am willing to try listening to book two b/c of Agent Dark.
