Publisher's summary

Ever since the Quantum Bomb of 2015 things have been different; the dimensions have fused and suddenly our world is accessible to elves, demons, ghosts and elementals and their worlds are open to us.

Things have been different for Special Agent Lila Black too: tortured and magic-scarred by elves, rebuilt by humans into a half-robot, part-AI, nuclear-fueled walking arsenal, and carrying the essence of a dead elfin necromancer in her chest, sometimes she has trouble figuring out who she is.

And a mission to the world of the fae may not help her work it out.

The fae are beautiful, glamorous, exotic, and talented. Their inventions make food taste better, make beer divine, and bring sparkle and mischief to the world but that's only the surface. And Lila is being sent in at the deep end, to the deepest, darkest levels of Faerie: on the primal level, nothing about the fae is glamorous at all.

In a winter-locked, raw, and primitive world, Lila has to deal with the fae at their most basic levels, as tricksters and dealmakers and the only deals worth making are bloody ones. If Lila's quest is to succeed, and if she is ever to escape Faerie, the right question must be asked, the right sacrifice must be made, and the right quarry must be hunted down on the winter solstice. All of which is difficult, when the only aides Lila brought to Faerie are her friends . . .

Justina Robson's new series combines her trademark themes of identity and reality, magic and technology, break-neck plots, a mischievous sense of fun, and a seriously sexy new heroine.

Excellent

Of all the stories I've read of the fairy-elf-fantasy genre, this author beats everyone except for maybe Lord Dunsany.
She follows the rather thin standard story line that this genre is always about, use of magic to right wrongs, destroy the bad guys, kill the trolls, etc, but her way is far more complex and elegant and holds your attention. Everything works and you stay entertained.
Additionally, she brings science in: our heroine is the 6 billion dollar woman, if you remember that TV series. If you don't, never mind.
I will automatically buy every audiobook this author puts out, which is the highest thing I can say about it. I have about 300 audible audiobooks, and there are only a very few that I will purchase like that.

second time though, confusing and delightful

I read this book years ago and listening to it in audible only reminded me how big and delightful the universe Justina Robson created for this series. great continuation of a heady, thrilling story.

Great.

Another great book with a great reader. Recommended for anyone who listen to the first two books.

Sort of spoiler alert

This is sort of a spoiler, but not a serious enough one that you might not want to read it. I hate it when an author kills off one of my favorite characters in hopes of getting me to read the next book, especially when I know it will work. There is a ton of action packed into this book, and it is kind of a blood bath, now that I'm thinking about it, but the story got more interesting and the plot took an unexpectedly delightful turn at the end. Though it's total brain candy without a single redeeming literary virtue, I really enjoy this series and was sad to find out that the next one isn't out yet.

I Just Can't

I've listened to the previous too, and just got more and more lost, this author needs to tone it down, a lot. Either the Author has no clue or has a diamond spoon in their mouth.
