About this listen

If God is sovereign, how can I be free to choose? But if God is not sovereign, how can he be God? Is it possible to reconcile God's sovereignty with human choice? This is one of the most perplexing theological questions. It's also one of the most personal. In Hand in Hand, Randy Alcorn says that the traditional approach to this debate has often diminished our trust in God and his purposes. Instead of making a one-sided argument from select verses, Alcorn examines the question in light of all Scripture. By exploring what the whole Bible says about divine sovereignty and human choice, hand in Hand helps us...

  • Carefully and honestly examine the different views on this issue
  • Gain a deeper understanding of God
  • Appreciate God's design in providing us the freedom of meaningful choice
  • See the value in better understanding what we cannot fully understand
  • Learn how to communicate about the issue in clear and compassionate ways
  • More fully experience the unity Christ intends for his Church

A careful guide through Scripture, Hand in Hand shows us why God's sovereignty and meaningful human choice work together in a beautiful way. Includes small-group discussion questions.

Charitable

A good view of this topic that presents both side of the argument in a charitable and gracious way. My only critique is that this author does not articulate how his view holds up while still holding to Total Depravity and original sin. Seems to me that the author doesn’t really need Calvinism to maintain his view on God’s sovereignty and man’s free will. Otherwise, I enjoyed this book and it was narrated very well.

great book on the subject, it helped me a lot

I love how the author goes into great detail about the differences between Calvinism and Arminianism. But the best part is the encouragement to reach balance and express love for those who have opposing views.

Escellent for the SERIOUS Bible Student

If you could sum up Hand in Hand in three words, what would they be?

An EXCELLENT comparative discussion

What did you like best about this story?

Research, simplicity, balanced

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The unabashed frankness and delivery

Any additional comments?

For the student of the Bible, this primer on Calvinism and Armenianism is an ESSENTIAL READ. The author is open, forthright and honest in presenting these SEEMINGLY mutually exclusive perspectives of God's sovereignty and man's free will. Bring an open mind and you will not be disappointed!

Open sharing of ideas from both sides.

Loved the fist five chapters best. The open discussion of the topics was very informing.

Great help in understanding different views

This book will be on my “Recommend ” list! Alcorn recognizes we have bias’ but tries to set aside his own to give a balanced view of his understanding of various views. He follows up with great examples and leaves you with much to ponder as we process through shaping scripture to each view. I have been left with a greater understanding and peace as well as a greater understanding toward those who may come to different conclusions than my own.

Great information

Ready does a great job in breaking down and teaching a difficult subject. This is some really heavy material that is not too easy to consume but is very well presented. Definitely worth the investment!

Refreshingly balanced

I love that this is read by the author! His discussion of the various theological positions is so practical, fair and refreshing. It has contributed greatly to my walk with the Lord and my need for grace. As well as my need to extend grace.

Best reconciliation of the subject ever heard

He presents the extreme views as they should be presented and calls us to understand the scripture for what it says with out allowing bias to overcome truth.

Scriptural Human Choice

A good look at various persuasions of thought behind human choice. How dogmatic am I?

Excellent and balanced explanations

I enjoyed this book and did not feel the author was trying to change anyone's view, only trying to explain both sides of the subject and make everyone think. I liked it so much I bought the paper book so I can highlight and refer back to specifics in it as needed. Great book on eternal security, free will, and predestination.
