About this listen

At Butler House, a series of grisly murders over a century have led many to believe it's haunted. To one scientist, it's the perfect place for an experiment in fear. Eight people, each chosen because they lived through a terrifying experience, are offered a million dollars to spend one night at Butler House. They can take whatever they want with them - religious items, survival gear, and weapons. All they need to do is last the night.

But there is something evil in this house. Something very evil...and very real. And when the dying starts, it comes with horrifying violence and brutal finality. There are much scarier things than ghosts. Things that will kill you slowly and delight in your screams. Things that won't let you get out alive.

Not what I expected but pleasantly surprised

First, the narration was superb. A great narrator can make a good book a great listening experience and a bad book tolerable to the end. This was my first Rob Shapiro book and I intend to explore more of his work. He is indeed a great narrator.

Second, I was a bit disappointed in the overall story because the story was not what I expected. I will be careful here not to drop any spoilers. On the other hand, what the story was entertaining. So it took me on some unexpected twists and turns that were a net positive.

I’ve had a lot of trouble finishing books lately because of poor quality writing and narrating. I finished this one in 3 days (which is pretty quick for me). This was my first Jack Kilborn book and there was clearly some history to each of the characters from his previous books. But enough of their stories were woven into this one to adequately develop them so that you care about them (or hate them as the case may be). I have a few other books in the queue, but I’m curious enough about some of the characters in this book that I might have to buy their stories as well.

While the plate wasn’t what I thought I was ordering, the meal was delicious. Everything else I’ve consumed in such a short period of time was worthy of 5 stars. So I can’t in good conscience leave anything less for this book.

Never a dull moment

What did you love best about Haunted House?

I've read a lot of his books so I'm familiar with the characters. I like how they've all been through different tragedy's but all have that one thing in common.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I have two: Moni Draper and Dr. Belgium. I love Moni because she's the odd-ball of the group. At one point everyone else was gainfully employed except Moni. She 's the street girl who learned and lived the hard way. Oh and she funny and foul-mouthed too. Dr. Belgium was just funny.

Which character – as performed by Rob Shapiro – was your favorite?

Hard to pick just one but I guess Dr. Belgium (especially once he's doped up.)

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed a lot. I've listened to this book several times already and plan to listen to it several more times.

Any additional comments?

I've read all the Konrath/Kilborn books that involve these characters previously (including Haunted House) and have been waiting for this to become an audio book. Rob Shapiro did one hell of a job narrating this book. You could not have picked a better narrator.

Great story and wonderful reader.

Story was frightening and suspenseful and the reader was marvelous. I'll be looking for more books by both this author and this reader.

Horror

Not my type of story, but there was a good story line. A lot of violence & gore. Much more scientific\military based then my usual preference as I said before. Narration was good.

Great writing and the story kept me enthralled until its conclusion. I'm from Charleston and it's a very haunted city. Thanks for the wonderful tale!

Scary and suspenseful - pure entertainment

I got this book to listen on my long drives to work. There were times I was screaming and covering my mouth as I listened, maybe because I scare easily! But definitely worth it
