What would you do to save yourself?

In the village where “all are welcome and those in need may stay” long-buried secrets keep rising to the surface. With renovations on the house finally complete, Jayne and Tripp are ready to open their B&B. Villagers and tourists gather for their grand opening barbecue. Close friends check in as their first guests. Aside from a minor glitch or two, everything is going to plan...and then someone turns up dead on the side of the road.

Unsure if she’s looking for a murderer or a hit-and-run driver, Jayne jumps headlong into figuring out what happened. Her confidence is shaken, though, when some of the locals point out that the rash of murders started when she arrived in the village, insinuating that she brought the darkness hovering over Whispering Pines. Now, in the middle of a possible murder investigation, Jayne must clear her own name as well.

Hidden Secrets

Hidden Secrets by Shawn McGuire is a hidden faceted gem. I loved how the author has created this village full of quirky characters and vivid imagery. There is Wiccan history and background, mystery, and suspense. With Jayne and Tripp, their relationship is solid, yet the author lets the listener use their imagination. Sandra Murphy is the perfect voice for this series. She brings the characters to life, and inflects the right emotions. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. I will most definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator. I love how the storyline is original and unpredictable.

Fantastic

This is the first I have read by this author but it won't be the last. The book was well written and kept me wanting to hear more. The twists and turns were well done and the characters all came to life. The Narrator did a great job of breathing life into the world and keeping you engaged the whole way through. I will definitely have to pick up the rest in the series. I was given a free copy of this audio in return for an unbiased review.

Totally Did Not See That Coming

This is part of a series, however, is also great as a stand alone. I have not yet listened to the other books of this series, but could easily follow along with the characters and the story line.

Jayne O'Shea inherits a large home in Whispering Pines, which I picture as a small town, where everyone knows your business and no one ever forgets your wrong doings. Jayne and her boyfriend, Tripp, decide to turn the home into a bed and breakfast and invite some of their closest friend to come stay for a long weekend and enjoy the luxury of the bed and breakfast and everything this small town has to offer. The bother-in-law of her best friend, ends up dead, with his body on the side of the road. As Jayne is the sheriff of this small town, her job is to try to put all the pieces together, as this body doesn't look like it was a hit and run, but something more sinister. From there, the real story begins.......

The narration on this book was fantastic! And I am sure that I will listen to move of her work.

Cozy murder mystery.

As always, I have to state that this book was given to me for free in exchange for a review.
I always like to state that this does not impact my review or my opinion of the book. My reviews are honest and my own opinion of the story, performance, and overall thoughts on the book.

There was a bit of a classic Agatha Christie feel to the murder plot which I really enjoyed. I love murder mysteries with a universally hated victim: there is a real guilty pleasure in the whole ‘karma’ aspect of a bad ‘un getting hurt rather than some sweet, unsuspecting innocent. Similarly, I really like it when the suspect pool is limited to a small number of close friends/family members so that the investigator really has to dig in with the interviews in order to root out the real feelings and motives.

In this case, I confess that I was a little bit puzzled as to how Jayne decided which suspects could be eliminated and why especially in the early stages of her questioning. It felt as if her usual insistence on protocol and remaining unbiased came under strain and she was perhaps making professional calls based on personal motivations. However this was recognized and addressed by the characters in the storyline, so didn’t cause any credibility issues.

Hidden Secrets is my favorite Whispering Pines book so far: gripping plotline; great character development for Jayne, Tripp, Reed, and Morgan; and an intriguing new addition with the introduction of the mysterious River Carr. Fans of cozy mysteries with a paranormal ‘woo woo’ flavor will love this series!

Fantasy Murder Mystery

Even though this was the first book I have read in this series, I found it was easy to read along. There is a lot going on in the town in this book, and I think reading the other books in the series would make it easier to understand the history.

Where this book begins, Jayne is taking over the land that her grandmother once owned of a small village filled with all kinds of Wiccan history. It’s an exclusive village, and the villagers are concerned about her opening up her bed and breakfast due to the new faces that will be coming and going from the village.

Jayne waves off their concerns until one of the visitors turns up dead. In this riveting mystery, everyone has secrets, and as Jayne searches for the murderer, all the dirty laundry of Whispering Pines comes to the surface.

I really did adore this book and all the well-defined characters. My only issue with it is the number of times the character said “woo woo” in reference to the Wiccans and their beliefs. Other than that, this is a great read!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Hidden Secrets

The tone of this series is serious so there is none of the witty banter I tend to prefer in my audio books, however, I do like this series. The characters are very likable and relatable (despite the woo-woo of magic!) The whodunit and why was kind of obvious from the beginning if you are are paying attention, but it doesn't take away from the enjoyment! Worth a listen!

I like Sandra Murphy as the narrator for this series.
